I am thinking as beemer stated dayshapes sunrise to sunset but you will notice on some ships it will not be taken down at sunset but you "shall" use the lights prescribed in either 30(a) or (b)
Probably the best answer, yet!quote:Originally posted by wolf

Hi Charlie,
Thank you for your email. Your interpretation is correct, you are required to display an all around white light between sunset and sunrise and in reduced visibility. The ball can be displayed during daylight but is meant for areas of high traffic or for narrow channels.
If you have any further questions don't hesitate to let me know.

Subject: Marine Safety Part C-Lights and Shapes?
I am planning to anchor somewhere off Secretary Island, southern Vancouver Island next month and was reading the regulations and may I ask for clarification please?
The length of my vessel is thirty feet and I am reading the following:
Home <http://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/menu.htm> > Transport Canada <http://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/tc-main.htm> > Marine Transportation <http://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/marine-menu.htm> > Marine Safety <http://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/marinesafety/menu.htm> > Marine Safety Publications <http://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/marinesafety/tp-menu-515.htm> > Collision Regulations, Office Consolidation - TP 10739 E <http://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/marinesafety/tp-tp10739-menu-785.htm> > Part C - Lights And Shapes
RULE 20 - Application
a. Rules in this Part shall be complied with in all weathers.
b. The Rules concerning lights shall be complied with from sunset to sunrise, and during such times no other lights shall be exhibited, except such lights as cannot be mistaken for the lights specified in these Rules or do not impair their visibility or distinctive character, or interfere with the keeping of a proper look-out.
c. The lights prescribed by these Rules shall, if carried, also be exhibited from sunrise to sunset in restricted visibility and may be exhibited in all other circumstances when it is deemed necessary.
d. The Rules concerning shapes shall be complied with by day.
e. The lights and shapes specified in these Rules shall comply with the provisions of Annex I to these Regulations.
RULE 30 - Anchored Vessels and Vessels Aground - International
a. A vessel at anchor shall exhibit where it can best be seen:
i. in the fore part, an all-round white light or one ball,
ii. at or near the stern and at a lower level than the light prescribed in subparagraph (i), an all-round white light.
b. A vessel of less than 50 metres in length may exhibit an all-round white light where it can best be seen instead of the lights prescribed in paragraph (a) of this Rule.
c. A vessel at anchor may, and a vessel of 100 metres and more in length shall, also use the available working or equivalent lights to illuminate her decks.
d. A vessel aground shall exhibit the lights prescribed in paragraph (a) or (b) of this Rule and in addition, where they can best be seen:
i. two all-round red lights in a vertical line;
ii. three balls in a vertical line.
e. A vessel of less than 7 metres in length, when at anchor, not in or near a narrow channel, fairway or anchorage, or where other vessels normally navigate, shall not be required to exhibit the lights or shape prescribed in paragraphs (a) and (b) of this Rule.
f. A vessel of less than 12 metres in length, when aground, shall not be required to exhibit the lights or shapes prescribed in subparagraphs (d)(i) and (ii) of this Rule.
If I am reading this correctly -
As my vessel is less than 50 metres in length and over 12 metres RULE 30 (a)(i) and (b) applies. Meaning as long as I am exhibiting my "all-round white light" (my current anchor light), as soon as I set anchor that is all required and there is no need to exhibit the ball? There will be approximately four or five hours of daylight while I will be at anchor.
Is "my" interpretation, correct?
Thank You, for your time.
