Daily Dummy

Was cleaning my fish at Cheanuh this afternoon, another guy beside me cleaning his fish. I hear someone talking to this guy..."you need to keep the tail on it when cleaning.." I glance over and see the badge. Then I hear.."nope, this is a coho, not a pink..... and this ones a sockeye". He had 3 illegal fish. The officer could have fined him huge. The officer was decent about it, took the fish and fined him a fraction of what he could have gotten.

So to follow up on the boat down at SS do you guys remember last year a guy losing control of his little truck a 3/4 ton chev towing a 28 ft whaler that was going to fast at the switch back on the renfrew road???people had posted pics and everything
Well if you remember this!!!!!!

ITS THE SAME GUY!!!!!!!!</u>

He didnt want to take any advise once again from people at the marina "to show" him or listen to anyone thinking he knew best once again well he didnt right-off his boat this year so I guess hes getting better just both bottom ends to a tune of 15 grand!!!!!

Just goes to show we always say nice boat no fish!!!!!andmaybe add no brains!!!! sad very sad!!!

Running into clutesi last weekend about 5 boats were coming back in the river and i was at the front and slowed down just before the breakwater maybe 100 yards short of the slow sign because a guy was on his kicker trying to get in and didnt see the need to wake him. Well the 4 other boats slowed a bit but still passed us right near the breakwater so they could get out first.

No biggie but then some butt in a black military looking zodiac that was decked for fishing and had suzukis on the back decides he is going to weave through the 5 boats at 30 mph in the last 100 yards so he can win the race and haulout first while swamping us. Then he ties up in the middle of a big spot so we are all left idle in a line in the river. Anyone know the boat? It stands out.

We ended up towing the boat that was on his kicker as his kicker broke down the last 50 yards and hauling out last.

That is good karma Kelly. Clutesi is one of the worst launches I have seen, especially when the tide/river is ripping and there are lots of very impatient people. I am glad to see there is at least someone there trying to manage the traffic.

Last year at Clutesi...a guys shows up with a brand new Striper 2301 with volvo duoprop leg. Pulls into the ramp area, parks and proceeds to get everything ready (blocking one lane at the ramp for 20 mins)...that's not the good part...he then hops into the boat and fires it up to warm up the engine?...boat's still on the trailer in the parking lot. Runs it for a few minutes, then launches.

Some people are too stupid to have nice toys.

Hate to bump this thread up again, but once again, there is a winner of the daily dummy award... Today i was being checked at the cleaning station and once done with me he stepped over to a older guy who was cleaning some pinks, and the officer asks "what you got there"? guy answers " Bunch of pinks, the usual" The officer looks closer and the fellow had a Coho and spring in the mix. The officer looks at the guy and say " Man its your lucky day, The guy has a puzzled look on his face, and the officer says your coho there just happens to be clipped. The guys answer was, they were all about the same size so we just assumed they were pinks. [xx(][xx(][xx(][xx(] It will never end :(

I had a guy in a 50 or so cruiser cutting to the east side of me while buzz bombing the shallows on the west side of Grants Reef.
He was barrelling full throttle towards us, so I grabbed my binos got his name and called him to tell him where he was. He answered back that he had plotted a line from Campbell River to Texada light and it did not hit the bouy on Grants.
I told him I was in 25 feet of water and his sounder would probably show 10 and he was coming into 5. I have never seen a boat that size turn to starboard so hard in my life.
He pulled alongside to thank me and told me his sounder already showed 10 and that he had a new autopilot that he was not yet used to. Then his wife appeared from below to tear a strip off him for tossing her to the deck.
After he left I began to wonder why you would run on autopilot and not pay attention to your surroundings there could be logs or anything out there.

My friend is a Coast Guard safety instructor. He is always hammering about "situational awareness"....looking around, relying on sight and sounds, not just instruments. I always roll my eyes and think "duh", as it is common sense....but then you read this, and can see exactly where he's coming from. What seems to be common sense for one person may be mind boggling for others...

Fished the head today in sooke, saw so many people netting small fish even shakers. Why! Why even net a pink or a coho. Came back in to Cheanuh about 2pm there was a large boat at the fuel dock and on the other side was the D Dummy with just his bow tied to the wharf and brand new long arm elc. downriggers out , no one near the boat. The wind blew his stern out and I missed his rigger by inches, he must have lots of money to spare. Saw some guys with a nice wild coho near the cleaning tables.

KCW i was there at about 12:30 and seen a wild coho about 12# i asked if it was a spring and the guy oblivious said "Yes" then i proceeded to tell him it was a wild coho, and he was not very impressed that i was showing him this. Then said its not my fish there my buddies. The thing had a huge hook nose, and no spots, white gums, i mean cmon people.

Hello, all.

As a kid growing up near Clutesi, my dad and I would take lawn chairs and join the old farts watching the gong show.
Dad would have beers and to this day swears that was the best enbtertainment he has ever had!

That was when I learned how much faster it is to put those stern ponies to use and not trailer with the 'emergency recovery device'.

Second the beef about those who assume that because their boat is bigger then they know more???

My favourite to watch, as long as I am not in line waiting for one of these folks, is when someone is reversing their vehicle down the ramp with a painter in his hand, stomps the brake to pop the boat off, hopefully remembers to put it in park (saw a dude forget this once) and then gets pulled down into the water by his now fast moving and uncontrolled boat. I watched a guy do this with a minivan and a 23' Explorer in Ladysmith recently, there was NO WAY that he had the arm strength to restrain the boat.

It is just too bad that more people don't:
a) take a course or two
b) watch and learn from others (and sometimes listen)

Phew!!
Better to vent here than at the ramps...

Tight lines and safe boating everyone ;)

Wow someone has a name close to mine....

Well here is one. I am out today in the fog, and I see this big boat in distance. It is like 35-40 foot cruiser with big american flag on the back.

He cuts right in front of me so hard I have to twist my boat sharply to right to avoid hitting him ( it was that close). Crazy thing is this guys again has radar, and I know if he paid attention he would see me ( i have a good radar reflector).

He finally turned, and of course as I yelled he just went yah yah. What an idiot. I am so sick of the poor navigation in limited visability. I saw at least two other boats today ( two bayliners) almost mow over a few boats around trap shack as well going 25-30 knots in poor visibilty.

SLOW DOWN!

That's where 2 pound lead comes in handy.

[:p]

JUST FISHEN'

I have seen a sportsboat or commerical fleet going at full speed straight to the boat that was playing with the salmon. close call by near losing a salmon along with flasher and lure!

Just a quick (maybe) question.
Now, when fishing with the tide direction in mind what will happen?
Tide coming in, boat coming in, kelp bed on left and fishing for big springs laying in kelp. On coming boat, you should move to the right as peer law but you are fishing close to kelp because if I'm not mistaken fish swim into current? What do you do, move to the right or stay left to be in the fish?
Thanks, for answers.

Saturday afternoon, the Wall, at Bamfield. I was trolling along and a 24ish older yellow Campion roared up from my stern and dropped the gear right in from of me, way too close. This is bad enough, but they hooked a fish, played it for ever, netted it. It was on their boat for at least a minute before one of them launched it overhand back into the water. Honest to god, it cartwheeled head over tail and flew at least 5'. With three guys on the boat, you would think at least one of them would have either boating or fishing ethics. These guys are LOSERS!

This was a long time ago, but I can still remember it clearly.

I was fishing Campy Byng in my tin can (teenager). I was the first one on the fishing grounds that morning, flat calm. I promptly hooked into a real nice coho. Tail walking across the surface. Just peeling out the line. The reel was screaming.

Off in the distance I see a Boston Whaler bow on, coming straight at me. I continue to play the fish, but continue to watch this boat coming at me. He's now well past Chaster Point and still flying.

Still playing the fish, I put my rod tip high up and start waving. The boat cuts between me and the fish. It was gone.

Fishspoon, it's always unreal to see a boat cruise way too close to someone playing a fish. It's a whole other deal when it happens to you!!! Maybe I'll mount a James Bond style 'ROCKET LAUNCHER' button on my dash.
This has happened 2X to me and I'll never forget either time, the first was a madly jumping ho, the second was a hog spring, both times I was in the process of being a thrilled poppa as one of my daughters was on the rod! Lucky for clown #2 that the incidents were a few years apart.

Smiley.

p.s. has anyone figured out how to let clueless captains know that they'd be doing a nice thing by giving your boat more room when you've got one on?
I've tried waving my arms and yelling; it usually works but not always.

Also suffered this annoyance. Years ago, when I was little, I some how hooked a decent spring behind the Indian Islands in Pender Harbour, while fishing for rockfish. It hung on for a bit, but some speedboat roared over it.

Have also seen the arm waving/yelling work.
