cut plug herring

How do you guys rig your cut plug herring? There are several variations in inserting the hooks, and I am confused!
Would appreciate any advice. Thanks!

Depends on what type of roll you want, many different rigging methods.
Describing it isn't very helpful, a picture tutorial is required. Google " How to rig a cut plug herring" or (something similar) and I'm sure you'll find some tutorials.

I tried that route. the video shows the roll only, NOT how to tie it!
I could not find any instructions on google, that is why I am asking!

Ok .... so here is how I tie a tandem rig for the purpose of cut plugging.

...and this is how I rig the herring:

bear in mind that it is more typical to bury the trailing hook on the short side of the cut..... or the inside of the roll. I use either depending on the desired roll rate.

Also ensure you scoop out the entrails creating a cavity that enhances roll. The cut itself is a compound 45 degree cut. Variations to this cut again alter the roll.

The aft hook is buried on the lateral line just behind the dorsal.

I want to start trying cutplug. How do you guys fish it? Off riggers? how fast? I have only fished it years ago and didnt do any rigging so am clueless.

I've mentioned this before, but I think there should be a section on the site for detailed answers to often asked questions. The mods could move what they think are excellent posts to this section. That would keep the same questions from being repeatedly asked. It's one thing if the question rates a simple response, but quite another if it requires pictures with detailed in depth instructions. I've seen this on other sites, it prevents the same question from being asked over and over. It also recognizes the posters that go above and beyond in answering complicated questions in great detail. A hall of fame for top notch answers if you will. Win, win, great posters are recognized for their time and effort, and redundant questions are reduced.

Just a thought.

I am with you on this one Big Guy. We have all gone to great lengths educating on the differance between single action and level wind for exapmle. ....... how many times? Would be great to have a Q and A section for sure.

Kelly: Get the biggest herring you can find. Brine them overnight to firm em up. I like both hooks on the side,both burried, better roll. Clean the guts out. Swivell about 6' up, no flasher and 20' off the clip. Tight slow roll, use tooth picks to adjust. Usually fish top 60'. You may not catch the most fish, but you will catch bigger fish. If you get some bumps I like to feed a couple of pulls out.
