Any idea how the nets don't do damage to the wild salmon that go into them?

The nets have a small mesh diameter and are strung tight, essentially acting like a wall for the fish, but allowing the water to flow past. So there's no chance of entanglement with this type of rigging. They swim up, then move laterally until they enter the collection and sorting area. Yes, there is potential for rubbing to occur, but these fish are at the maturation stage of up-river migration, so they are physiologically prepared for that kind of minor contact.

One would think that traps like these would be better to increase the amount of selective fisheries to protect more species and runs of concern.

Maybe we should have these on more rivers to replace the endless nets stretched across the width of a river that catch everything and anything!!

Should work well: release what you want and harvest what you want after escapement is met. Reduce indescriminet gill net fishing.

Remember it's a hatchery river with a huge amount of pinks. Better to catch surplus pinks in trap and count and release others. You will also get an accurate count of escapement which may enable better rec opportunities.

Not going to happen unfortunately , every fish will be bonked sold to wallcan period .

Who cares where they go as long as the are within there allowable catch and the numbers are captured and monitored

How do they intend to sort hatchery fish when they are odalith marked? I’ll be willing to bet within 4 years the numbers are so poor in the Campbell River that all sport fishing will be shut down.

From what I understand pinks would be harvested as ESSR if available and some other species for FSC. There is an abundance of pinks most years. They are also running stock assessment with their biologist.
