Chickens?

Welcome Allen. Yes you have seen me on your site. Work and weather have kept me at bay. Hopefully that changes tomorrow and I can take a run out to JR. Not looking that promising though. 30knot winds predicted makes for good kayak surfing but not so good to fish. I might have to settle for 10 mile or Island View.

Safety is always at the front of my mind when doing this.

You know, the end game can be quite a "challenge" for anything larger than a chicken. Some use harpoon/buoy or sharkhook/buoy and let the fish play out on the buoy. They certainly work. I've at times used a more interesting method when I don't want to drag all that gear around with me. When a large butt first comes to the surface, I tap them on the head with my paddle causing them to go off on a line searing run. Repeat as necessary until the fish tires some. Then when it's sitting on the surface, slide a knife under its gillplate and cut them. It will go on another line searing run at this point (wouldn't you?). Shortly thereafter, the fish will be "tamed" at which point it can safely be landed.

Howard's 183 pounder used none of these methods. He deemed the situation too unsafe so he drug the beast to shore on his line.

islandboy, have you seen the new Canadian site? Jeff and I spun it out. He hangs out there quite a bit and can offer more advice on the butts. He's much better at it than I am.

Looks like fun but I bet one of those flatties strapped to the deck will bring a few exciting moments on eventually. I'd be chicken to leave it there myself. I think seal teeth up close are too scarey to chance it, and sea lions and killer whales are worse.
 
I once had a "pest" try to steal a salmon from me. Here's the outcome of that confrontation!!!

Yes, I've had sea lions and seals harass fish being reeled in. But I've never had one snag something from off the kayak.

I don't know what kind of shark they are but if you look closely you will see that they have "bang sticks" with powerheads..... pretty easy to kill a shark or hali for that matter with those babies...

Look like salmon sharks, related to the great white, very fast swimmers. They are usually found north of the Haida Gwaii and around Alaska.[}:)][}:)]:D

Yup....those would be salmon sharks. Those guys are crazy even if they aren't "man-eaters"!! ;) [8D]
 
That pics of the Salmon Sharks are not my cup a tea and I do believe there numbers are pretty low. You never know when a Salmon Shark might take down a Kayak HAHA

Crazy stuff you kayaking maniacs!

I remember reading about those guys with the salmon sharks, they do tuna and stuff as well. Those were caught in Alaska I believe by cut plugging whole pink salmon in a bay full of them.

Just remember you don't control the size of the fish that bites. Be prepared. Two years ago we pulled a 125 from very close to shore, in more of a rockfish type spot...

On one of the BC forums a while back there was a thread on them. I had done some reading online and found a published study/document on their populations (can't seem to find it now)and if I recall correctly their populations are actually doing really quite well.
 
No Kelly, a halibut.

We did have a shark of about 400 lbs offshore at the end of August though. My best guess would be that it was a salmon shark? Was a lot fatter than the pictures of blues Ive seen.

Osama, did you hook that big shark bottom fishing? If so, probably a 6 gill. Had a few big ones on the long line gear off WCVI, and they are big and round, nothing like a skinny blue. Always released without harm of course. And very neat fish.
 
Nope, he was on the surface cruising around while we were sitting there jigging for halis.

I grabbed a salmon rod with a big spoon on it, hooked a salmon belly onto it and pitched it a few feet in front. Sure as chit is brown he snatched it and turned. He didn't even know he was hooked at first, kept milling about taking a bit of line then kinda coming along.

Then he realized something wasn't right.

So we chased him for quite a while and had him right beside the boat at one point.

The client wanted it, but -

a) I really had no goddamned idea how to deal with it

b) I couldn't positively identify it before it rolled in the mono and finished the game.

Was sure cool though!

I've seen six gills, my Auzzie buddy caught a couple off the dock here a couple seasons ago.

Sounds like fun. Cool to see them cruising like than, and then fall sucker to a piece of bait. And extra cool that your buddy his a couple 6 gills off the dock.
 
In Alaska there are some guides that specialize in salmon shark fishing. They are pretty hard to catch.[}:)]
