I fish from a kayak and would like to get into halibut chickens. [:p] Not looking for a train ride out in the straight. :D Aside from "get a real boat", any advice? :)

How do you get to choose whats biting down there?
I suppose if you use smaller hooks / bait the smaller fish will come to your offering.
Good luck

I have caught some of the biggest hali's on small bait so be careful you might go for a ride!LOL
185 on salmon belly 5 inches long(top secret bait)LOL

A 100LBER and you could get that kayak up on plane:D and have yourself a fun ride

As long as I do not run out of line and find out how BOUYant the kayak is. :D

Hey IB, a good place to try this summer is Sombrio. Fishin-T caught a 20lb. off his OK Prowler 15 back in the spring of 2006. I'm not sure if Jordan River is a good spot...

Has anyone else caught a hali off JR?

I'm going to try fishin off from my yak as soon as the weather heats up and hopefully before the wind picks up as it's much different fishin off a kayak.

Many moons ago when I was a surf bum on southern Vancouver Island I shared a place with a good friend. One night we were in the old hotel at Jordan River indulging in a few pints with another local guy and the subject of getting out fishing came up. Ron and Larry decided to go first thing in the morning.
I'm not much of a drinker so I left for home before they did. Larry staggered in at a wee hour a bit worse for wear and that seemed to cap the evening. A few hours later I was rudely awakened by Ron, Larry's drinking companion, who insisted I get up and go fishing with him. He was slurring his words and smelled bad so I fended him off and directed him to Larry's bedroom. There, he woke Larry and dragged him out to go fishing. I rolled over and went back to sleep.
A couple of hours later, as I was enjoying my breakfast and savouring my not-hung-over state, they appeared at the door, panting, puffing, muddy and sweaty and wanting me to take them in my pickup to retrieve their fish.
They had paddled their 14' canoe towards Point-No-Point and started jigging for Rockfish. They'd caught a few and then Ron hooked something very large that commenced towing them westward.
Ron held the rod and barfed over the side a lot while Larry back-paddled on the shoreward side to exert shoreward pressure on the fish. By now they knew it was likely a big Halibut and their only chance to land it was to ....well....land it. They eventually got it into shallow water about three miles or so from where they hooked it and then beached it. Then they broke both paddles beating it to death. I shudder to imagine the scene...

Recognizing where they were, they clambered up the hill towards the huge dump pile, circled it through the bush then hiked out the access road to the highway. Nobody came along so they walked from there back home.
We rousted out another buddy, Hugh, and set off after the prize.
The four of us managed to carry the Hali up the hill to my truck then Hugh paddled the canoe back to JR with a paddle we brought with us.
We never weighed it, but it was well over 100 lbs. and 5 1/2 feet long. Pretty well everyone in JR had fresh halibut that day as we shared it around the small hamlet with everyone we knew. And, of course, we knew everyone.
Sometimes the fish gods smile on drunken fools I guess, although for weeks after I had to hear the story of their superior angling skills over and over and over.

Take care.

Seek and ye shall find.

We have a guy named Allen Sansano that blogs for us that has done about everything from a kayak. I'm not sure if hes fished the west side of VI yet, but I'm certain he'll be able to give you some advice regarding gear, boats, and how to do an Eskimo roll when a big hali tows you over :)

Best of luck and please post some reports on the Sportfishing BC forum so we can see how you do.

Alas, the old JR Hotel burned to the ground in 1984.
Classic place and I lived right next door for some time so the Pub was like my living room in some respects. That was circa 1975 and on.
Actually, today is the 33rd anniversary of the day I moved right into Jordan River to a cabin on the little point to the left, just past the Breakers Cafe. It's the terminus of the Juan de Fuca Trail now I think.

Also, I'm told the Breakers Cafe is closed as is Shakies, the little place just over the bridge on the right.
Don't know why or for how long but don't go out there expecting them to be open right now.

Take care.

Cool story and a good view of my old stomping grounds too.
The Hiellen River joins the sea right at the base of Tow Hill and after surfing there I'd often catch a cutthroat trout in the rivermouth and cook it up in my camper.
Lots of memories whenever I see a pic of Tow Hill and the area.
Thanks.

I've caught a few of my own as well. Here's me with a couple chickens and my friend Dave with something slightly bigger.

The biggest I've heard of caught off kayak is by Howard McKim out of Ketckikan. That fish went 183#. The butts in the above pic were caught on a trip with him.

The guy up in QCI is Jeffrey Goudreau. His season is just starting up there, but he's gotten into some nice ones so far this year including a 50# and another pushing 40#. I'm heading up there to kayak fish with him in August. We'll be hunting for big momma butt on that trip.

Go gettem islandboy and let us know how you do. I've seen you on my site, right?

Man thats crazy you guys. A 183# Butt in a Kayak!!. Is this the next new Xtreme sport. Better than Bunjee jumping as you get to bring something home to eat.
Be safe out there guys!!
I know safe ain't fun, but those fish can do some damage.
