Chartering in Hawaii?

Has anyone here ever chartered in Hawaii, specifically Maui? I'm going there in late Jan. / early Feb. and thought it might be fun to try out a share boat. Any experiences good or bad would be appreciated. I've checked out most of the Maui fishing web sites, but some insider info would be great.

Thanks,
Michael

Buddy of mine did it a couple of years ago....
he and 3 others chartered an offshore boat for a day
and fished for Mahi mahi (Dorado).
he said it was a gas ! apparently those fish fought like
salmon on speed !
Good eating too.

Can't help with Hawaii but I've some experience chartering in Mexico. Caught my share of Marlin. Found the best way was to go as a walk on. If you share with someone who has already covered the main cost of the trip the charters will put you on for peanuts. Last marlin I caught in Mazatlan cost me 60 bucks U.S. as a walk on. There's generally way more small private charter operators that you can dig around for that are not listed on the big glossy web sites. My limit for a boat in Mexico is 250 dollars but lots will quote 5 to $700. Try to find someone with a friend who has a boat & loves to fish. Ask around. Just as human in Hawaii as anywhere else!

don`t prepay over the web or pre book . like what was said earlier, you can fined good deals cheapy cheapy . scottyboy. . go 2 the marinas talk and you will be surprised at what you will find

Thanks everyone for your advice. I think I'll just sniff around when I first get there. I'm kinda excited, it'll be my first non-west coast fishing experience. I'll post when I get back.

Check the local paper classifieds for shared bottom fishing trips, you never know what you'll dredge up.[8D]

I've done beach fishing and off shore charters. Forget marlin they're pretty much done but Dorado should be okay. Go to the warf and check out the charter boats. The condition of the boat and the attitude of the captain in person makes a world of difference. Years ago I shared a boat with a couple of hillbillies from West Virginia who had jsut won the lottery. Freaking hilarious.
