cannon electric riggers on craigslist

I had them on my boat when I bought it. Good riggers. Direct drive so no belts to worry about. You have to use stainless steel line - no braid. The positive ion control shoots a current down the line and controls the auto stop feature, such that when the line breaks the water, the motor stops. You can't automatically stop the thing before the line breaks the water, so stacking rods is tough unless you're prepared to watch the line coming up closely and shut the rigger off when the top line clip comes out of the water. If you're not planning on stacking rods - the Canon's are a good option. I sometimes fish with three guys on the boat and want to stack at least on one side. Sold my Cannons and bought Scotty.

Cannon is a quality product more expensive than Scotty and parts aren't quite as accessible here not really much of an issue though it's not like they break down a lot they don't-the 'power down' option takes a little getting used to but is very handy.

Not being able to use braid is a deal breaker for me. That and the added hassle when stacking. Can't get triple headers with only 2 lines down there!

You have to use the digitrolls to use braid. We have 3 digitrolls and would never go back to scotty.

I know plenty of guys that use electric Canons with braid. Is this something that is model specific?

And the Penn Magnum 10HS I posted has waterline autostop;

Yes, it is model specific. The following is from another forum (http://www.theoutdoorline.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=1903)

Q. Can you use braid on the digitroll and will the stop work?

A. Braid is fully compatible with the Cannon DT5 & DT10 downriggers. Since both these unit are equipped with a digital counter, they are more akin to the old, reliable Penn downriggers in that they stop at zero. Both units have a WATER ZERO button on the keypad so you can set your stop position at anywhere you want and that's where she stops. Every time!

While braid can and often is used with the Cannon Digi-Troll units, the Cannon Mag STX series has been designed from the ground up to function with stainless steel wire. The Positive Ion Control (imposed voltage on wire, a built-in "Black Box" if you will) feature is directly tied to Short Stop which slows and then stops the cannonball just above the surface.

Short Stop senses the "circuit" -between the stainless wire and the water- broken as the cannonball exits the water and Auto Up is shut off.

If the Cannon Mag STX unit does not sense the presence of wire grounded to the water, then the Auto UPfunction cannot be switched on. Since braid is electrically inert (non-conductive) it cannot carry the electrical "input" that the Cannon Mag STX units require for full functionality.

My advice: go back to wire or upgrade to the Digi-Troll series. If you PM me, I'll be happy to provide you with a spool of Cannon Camo cable pre-loaded on a spare spool to ease your transition back to wire.

After posting the above info, Cannon Technical Service Supervisor Mark Blaschko sent me this note:

"Looks good Nelly. I would add the fact that there is a notice stated in the operators manual:"

NOTICE: Short stop and Positive Ion Control features do not function when spooled with monofilament or super lines or if the boat is not properly grounded.

I think it's the positive ion control that shoots a current down the line and the auto stop feature that requires the stainless steel line. The current won't travel down the braid. I'm sure you can use braid if you're not worried about these features, but then you've paid a lot of money for nothing.
