Can you use a smart tv to link to a lowrance hds 12 gen 3 as a separate screen?

No. I dont believe so... unless the smart tv has wifi... and access to the google play store.. if thats the case.. then actually yes.. Bring on the 42" fish finder..

I've used a 10 inch tablet in a tough case for a second screen for the lowrance... works well enough.

You can down load the link app to mimic your screen to your phone or tablet with Lowrance or Simrad. I’m not sure if you can then mimic your tablet to a smart tv through Bluetooth.
If your tv has the ability to download apps you might be able to download the link app and mimic directly to your tv.
You can hard wire through the Ethernet port from your unit to a screen, obviously it would be sight only, you would be able to operate through the screen.
