Buying used outboards in the states?

Anyone know if you have to pay tax at the border if you buy a used outboard in the states and bring it here?

Sadly yes, you do. It’s still considered as “importing goods”. If you find a seller who’s Ok with putting a reasonable $$ figure on the bill of sale, you might be able to save some pesos. When our dollar was at par with the USD, this still made a lot of sense but unless you find a super deal, it’d be hard to justify vs a private cash purchase here in BC. Buying a lease return from a reputable dealer is still a better option IMO.

If you stay for a couple days I believe you get $800 cad tax free. Also there may be duty if it’s not mercury but hopefully someone knows for sure.
Correct! Confirmed this with the US custom many years ago. If made in Japan, you’re in for duty on top of taxes.
