I've been thinking about fishing Bute Inlet in the near future. It's getting really tough for me to make the run out to Ucluelet for salmon. Trying to stay at Big Bay means running one of the rappids ever time I go out fishing. Does anyone know of any anchorages up the inlet? I'm pretty much self contained. I hear the fishing can be pretty exciting up that way. Suppose to be a good spring run also. Appreciate any info that can me passed along.

Well-- I have been up at Sealion Rock Lodge on the east of Sonora Island in January. 100MPH outflow winds at minus 10C. You couldnt get anywhere near the docks becaise they had 8" of ice on them and they were starting to sink. Bute is good place to stay away from in the winter.

Well that's news to me, never heard of a lodge at the end of Bute. I would stay at the government dock at Big Bay or at Morgan's Landing and run the Arrans around slack or on the ebb (Bob Morgan could help you with when to run the tides if needed). There is a small cove on the backside of Stuart Island, northeast end, that you could anchor; however, it may not be enough shelter to stay out of the winds coming down Bute at this time of year. Possibly best spot near Stuart Island is a bay with good shelter and anchorage at Fawn Bluff which is across the inlet and north of the Arran rapids. There is a dock at Orford river that is owned by the Homathco Band for tying boats up during bear viewing trips, perhaps check their website and ask to tie up there.

I stand corrected. This must be a relatively recent lodge opening - last two years? I think it's non-retention for salmon in that area - beautiful location.

Let me do this over. I meant going up in July. Sorry for the confusion. Thinking about buy a large freezer for the back of the boat also. Have a good gen set to keep it running.

Hence his place of origin, kill em all mentallity for a run that is nothing like it used to be[xx(]

be nice now boys-- its Xmas ;) Nothing wrong with carrying a freezer if you stay within the limits. I know several board members that do this.

Since I plan to stay a week or better. To keep my catch in tip top shape, I wanted to process my catch, vacuum pack them and freeze them. This way, they are in the best condition I can ask for when I have them for a meal. I'm a strong believer in sustainable fishing. I don't keep Lings over 20lbs because they are females and halibut over 50lbs because of the same. Even though I'm from the states, I donation to the local fisheries for future days of fishing.
It's O.K. to make fun of me because I can laugh at myself also. That's what makes life fun. Wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Lets go enjoy the water critters out there.
