If you cant get ice in Nanaimo you can get the good lasting chip ice in bulk when you get to Campbell River its only a few minutes out of your way from where you turn to go to gold river. You just cross over the Campbell River Bridge pass by my work Daigle Marine on the left and its on the right hand side @ Boat Land you will see the signs on the highway. This is where most people going to Nootka stop for ice. If you have a minute stop by Daigle Marine / Eagle Craft Boats and say hi!
Hey MyEscape, I've never been too impressed with the Bar Ice that Boatland sells. You can get Salt Ice at either High Tide (accross from the Fishing Pier or CR Seafoods (Campbellton on old Hwy). The Salt Ice will outlast that chip stuff 2-1. Poor decision on Boatland's part not to make Salt Flake Ice.
Tip.If you have a freezer?Take a bathroom waste basket line it with a white small kitchen garbage bag fill with water freeze it and do a couple more.I use a big 150L coleman cooler it keeps it frozen for 5/6 days.I also have a ice cube maker on our fridge.Empty it into green garbage bags a couple of times and bingo cube ice for fish bellys and beer.If you do as much fishing as I do it saves a bit of change.
