Boat is shifting hard OUT of gear?

So weird thing keeps happening. I reverse into my spot a long way so I'm in and out of gear several times. My starboard side is clunking hard when I shift into neutral. Doesn't make any sense to me at all. Anyone ever had this happen? Volvo diesel IO

i used to have an inboard,,, some kind of shift sensor stopped working on it.. instead of killing the motor for a few rpm between shifts, its would have a steady idle and have to bang it into gear of suffer the slow shift grind. possibly? mentioned below,, shift interupt switch.
