Bluetooth meat thermometer

My daughter gave me a Meater wireless temp probe for Christmas. I used it right away for cooking the turkey, with excellent results. It has two temperature sensors, one reads the internal meat temp and the other monitors ambient (oven or BBQ) temp. As the end of the cook, I inserted my trusty handheld meat thermometer right beside the Meater probe and they showed identical temps.

This is a great tool for longer cooks like roasts, or in environments with less precise controls, such as charcoal and wood fired BBQs. Now it's easy to monitor charcoal setups with a lot less need to lift the hood, as the BBQ temp is right there on your phone. No wires to interfere with oven/BBQ/smoker door seal, or to tangle on a rotisserie.

The probe snaps into a small magnetized holder, which also functions as a charging unit and a wireless repeater. Place this unit 2-5 ft from the oven or BBQ to send signal to phone or tablet. The whole thing is as long as a teaspoon. After cooking, the probe snaps back into the holder, which contains a single AAA battery for recharging. The maker says that AAA will last two years of cooking one steak a week.

The app has presets for commonly cooked cuts of meat; after a few minutes in the oven it will calculate a finish time. I told it whole turkey, stuffed, bird weight, medium-well done, and it did the rest (default setting was displaying degrees celsius). The green line on the graph is oven temp (set at 325°F

It appears that the makers are discontinuing the entry SE model. As far as I can tell, the Meater Plus is functionally identical, the sole difference is the Plus has a bamboo finish on its holder/charger unit. Some online retailers are blowing the SE out at under a hundo at the moment. There are also dual and four-pack sets so you can get everyone's steak done just so. Impressively simple product, set up and connected in a couple of minutes. Good bang for the buck.

I thought I was looking at more Ford Lightning charging time screen shots.
Yeak I was nerding out as usual, but it was impressively easy to set up and use. Also a crap ton of recipes/instructions in the app. Can feel my BBQ game is gonna lift this coming spring/summer.

I looked at the meater for a looooong time before opting for the ChefsTemp instead. The main difference being that the Chefs Temp has a digital screen to replace my dome thermometer plus the probes. It also can control the breezo auto fan which I'm not interested in. Lastly it works on wifi and an app so you can monitor your cook while you're away from the house. I got tired of bluetooth losing signal in the house.

I have been tempted by these guys since they came out, but have been scared off by reports of poor connectivity and app glitches. I'm sure like any tech it gets better/more stable with each update. And of course the people that are having issues are more likely to write a review than those that aren't. By no means throwing shade - I hope it works flawlessly for you.

I have been using one of these for 5 or 6 years and have never had an issue. Carry the remote around on my neck and the wife calls it my "meat pager". https://www.thermoworks.com/smoke/?srsltid=AfmBOoriInPMih6xyjedLjNyDXvuWMUQTfBpF3ImsaTPCI9DQPVxwe2j

No you're spot on. I'm one of those guys writing the bad reviews lol. Used in its simplest way, it works fine. Once you start adding more probes and leave your house, things get a little haywire. It usually reconnects in short order, but it's frustrating getting "signal lost" alerts or opening the app and it's just blank. You end up having to restart the app to reconnect it. I think the issue is in their internal servers. You can also just leave it on bluetooth to simplify things.

I was actually referring to the OP and the Meater - but yeah I'm sure its a common thing whenever you're dealing with wireless and apps etc. regardless of the brand.

Although it's not something I've done myself, I can see being able to monitor the cook while away from the house being useful to some. I guess you could call back to someone still at home and give instructions, all while catching an extra couple of springs because you were worried you might be a bit light on for the crowd.

I have been tempted to buy one as well, but regarding using Wi-Fi, there is great connectivity with my Anova sous vide machine when I leave the house. I can be gone for hours and check the app to see how the cook is going. Super helpful.

So instead of the Meater, I bought one of the Thermapen Mk4 Thermometer but obviously you have to be on site for using this kind of probe.

I knew that a passion for cooking would mean that in time I’d have way more kitchen tackle boxes filled with kitchen tackle. This cooking is an expensive sport.

Maybe next year the Admin can get the Gourmet Warehouse to sponsor the 12 days of Christmas.

Ah, right. That's actually why I avoided the Meater going for something with better tech. As you say, the reviews seemed mixed.
