Scotty Plastics make a very good black box but it is about $300. There is a cheaper one sold for about $100 you can get it through Cabela's or Island Outfitter - don't know who makes it. I have the cheaper one and it seems to work well.
Scotty also has a book about using a black box that documents all the research behind using a black box and what settings to use for different fish species. You can buy this book in most fishing shops and book stores. You can also make your own black box with a car battery and leads to the downrigger wire like the old commercial fishermen used to do. Hope this helps.
I use the cheap black box made from pro troll works great. I cannot comment on if it catches me more fish. However what I do know is from reading the book and making the suggested changes to my electrical system I dropped my boats natural output from 1.00 which is very hot to .61 which is much better. I did catch all species of salmon last year on my boat but I think it was a matter of doing alot more things right not just because I had installed a black box. The more thing you do right the better your chances. Just my opinion. <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>
I found that I can attract herring schools and drive them apart using the black box. Commercial fishing has used them for years. I do catch more fish when I use it than when I just put the downriggers out.
i usually run at a setting of 0.65 for less than 100 feet deep and 0.67 down to 200. I tend to fish an area called Grants Reef and Sentry Shoal out between Powell River and Campbell River
