Black Bass

How do you catch black bass in Nootka Sound and Port Renfrew?

How do you not catch them? I catch them mostly while jigging for cod. They tend to school up anywhere between the surface and the bottom. Pretty good fighters for their size.

My wife, son, and I caught a bunch off the breakwater in Tofino one year, using Bass jigs. Are the Black Bass not a member of the rockfish family and therefore subject to the same rules and limits? Still trying to figure out half of the species around that aren't specifically listed in the regs and what family they belong to when it comes to limits etc.

Yes Sebastes Melanops

Like all good Canadians they love shiny things.

Also-they sometime school with Silver and occasionally Blue Rockfish-something I learned on this board.

I got some out past Burdwood in the kelp and rockpiles across Nootka Sound from the lighthouse. No need to use expensive jigs and lose them in the kelp.

Do you just use your downriggers for that? Cant you catch them right by the surface?

Dude.....you can catch them anywhere in the water column.

When running in from offshore off the WCVI......I swing by a kelp bed on the way in and will cast for them; everyone loves ceviche during happy hour and they offer themselves up absolutely wonderfully.

It sounds like the Renny guys get them thick down there.....we have got them further up Island on the outside....on the inside.....from a canoe in and around Kyuquot.....they are there.

Anywhere from the "surface" to "20 feet down to 150"......they are all over the place.

You are thinking WAY too hard about catching these things......I love the taste of them but way, way too much over analyzing. :p ;);) :D

These are tasty buggers, I like em fried with a coating of crushed goldfish crackers on them. I prefer them over ling anyday.
