Black Bass

We do ours in a mustard breading. Just the thought of it makes my mouth water.

These things are dead simple to catch, if they are there, and you put a hook down, you WILL catch some. When you are near them it is hard to get to the bottom when jigging for Lings or Rockys. Some of them do also put up a bit of a fight sometimes. I agree they are very tasty.

These are tasty buggers, I like em fried with a coating of crushed goldfish crackers on them. I prefer them over ling anyday.

coat em with hot sauce then into the seasoned flour(little baking powder) can also be dipped in egg then back in the flour...fry in hot oil...works good with fresh water bass too...tasty critters for sure but I still prefer ling...sammy

Used to catch them off Beechey head, right from the shore, with purple worms and splitshot. I would always highgrade and release the little guys and just keep the occasional 5 pounder for dinner. Unfortunately, that particular area got fished out during the 90's. I used to see asian dudes (sorry, not to sound politically incorrect or racist, but I call a spade a spade) walking out w/ safeway bags full of the little baby black rockfish. They don't reach sexual maturity until they are 12 yrs old. Considering rockfish species in general, thats one of the youngest.

Dust the fillets in cajun spice then bake or fry. When almost done cover with grated Monterey jack cheese, soaks right in!

What is the limits on the black bass per person?

Its a Black Rockfish, so you can only keep 1 per license in Areas 12 to 19, 20-5 to 20-7 and 29-5. But if you go past West of a line from Sheringham Pt. to the International Boundary (Area 20W) and beyond you can keep 3 per license. Just found that out by accident myself. Great thing about the Blackies is that they mature faster than the other Rockies and I find I can recover bigger fillets off the spiny fighters.

Bassblaster, would you give me the recipe? like how much mustard, what kind and do you fry em or bake em? My wife loves them and I like to keep her happy which keeps me fishin. "Happy wife is a happy fishin' life"

I hear ya AlGee, why do folks always have to do that. Take more than their share without thinking of the future. 5 pounders, wow that would be great. i practice the same thing, keep the biggies and tenderly let go of the little ones. Gonna try that recipe after the weekend if i get any, thanks.

From ten years of diving Barkley Sound......this is my observation:-

Black Rockfish are not found any old place. One reef will hold dozens and dozens. Another reef will have none.

Whenever I saw them......they were schooled up at the point or end of a reef in mid-water column. Could be 30ft down....could be sixty feet down.

At evening they will come up shallow to surface.

Years back in Victoria...(early sixties)....I used to catch them off the inside of the breakwater right around dusk.

All I used was a spinning rod with a one-inch fly made out of a small piece of white rag and some splitshot couple feet up the line.

Just cast out.....retrieve with a jerky motion......bingo.

I imagine there are.....I never dove too many places on the east coast.....but the places I did dive on ECVI I never saw big schools of black Rockies like in Barkley Sound. Which is not to say they aren't there.

I never saw a single China Rockfish (Blue) on ECVI either.
