“MONSTER 196 POUND HALIBUT ” REELED IN – SAY WHAT?
Shock and Awe are unstatements when describing the incredible fishing adventure that Darcy Roland (Ontario) and son in law Paul Marier (Powell River) experienced with Steve Yakimovich of Ocean Rambler Fishing Adventures when they hooked into the monster halibut while fishing off Oak Bay in Victoria BC.
Darcy was in for the battle of the year, this monster halibut swallowed a whole Mackrel and was making a run for the deep. Thirty minutes into the fight Darcy was just about to pass the rod off to Paul and the monster appeared behind the boat. At 75 inches and just over 196 pounds this is the biggest halibut weighed in in many years.
In anticipation of such a catch Captain Steve was prepared with new Shimano halibut rods and reels spooled up with 100 pound tuff line and 200 pound mono leaders. This monster was not going to get away.After hitting this monster with a perfectly placed harpoon shot and letting the big fish tire herself out a shark hook was placed in her mouth and the mother of all halibut came over the rail of Steve’s 25 foot Bertram!
Steve Yakimovich has guided fishermen on many charters over the years off the coast of Vancouver Island and this is the biggest halibut he has seen in 10 years.
