Thanks and WOW! How do you bring this up with a rod and reel? Even if you fish with 100# test line - say buoyancy makes this hali weigh half his 'dry-weight' - if she doesn't want to come up, you can pull as hard as your line allows and you wouldn't move her an inch! Amazing!

Aw-- poof!! There goes my "largest Island butt" for the year...[:0][:0]:D

Awesome!!!! I cant open the link either-- can someone cut n' paste the text story. Thanks

My wife says I have the largest butt on the island, which is why the chips, salsa and beer are in 'MY' fridge downstairs next to the tool box and T.V. [:I]
Seriously though that was 1 incredible fish.

Chinook are Slower but still around

Congradulations to Kirk and Randy fishing on the Grey Hackle out of Jock's Dock in Sooke, landing a wopper Halibut at 323lbs! They brought the fish into Eagle Eye Outfitters 10:30 this morning. Salmon fishing in Sooke has SLOWED over the last few days, some good catches are coming in, not everyone is getting into them or even getting bites. There have been groups of small fish 8 to 14lbs hanging around Otter Point the last few days. There were also some big Springs moving through the area on the weekend, producing some awesome strikes on our boat, many fishermen reported losing alot of those fish. Congradulations to Ken White fishing out of Jock's Dock who brought in an awesome 42lb Spring on Thursday Sept. 4th. Some trollers have been venturing out to the tide lines looking for Coho, and there was a report of some Springs being picked up out there. Areas around the Harbour mouth should be good for the next few weeks, as the big Springs move out of the area, and the big Spring season wraps up for another year. October 1st marks the opening of one wild Coho per person in Sooke, and many boats will be trolling out to the tide lines to catch these fighting fish. Betsy flashers, red mirror flashers, white glow, and green glow anchovey heads have been working for us, trolled anywhere from 45 to 105ft. The late afternoon bite at Otter Point on the flood tide has been the most consistant way to produce a fish. Fish can be weighed in at Sooke Harbour Marina on thier computerized scale compliments of fishtactics.com. Check out the websites' pictures of fish weighed in on the DST scale live, as they are weighed.
Aug.26thFishing with Mats Bjorn and Erik this time starting at Sherringham Point. Slow morning, didn't see many fish caught, there were only three boats at the light house and two of them had one fish each. We fished it until noon picking up a nice 13lb Spring. Continued to troll back to Otter Point for the afternoon and landed a 15 and 21lb Spring Salmon there. Flat calm day with some rain.
2REEL2 Bob and his morning guests landed a 12 and 15lb Springs at Possession Point.
Aug.27thFishing with our Swedish guests for their last trip out, Possession Point was good. Erik landed a great 15.5 lb hatchery Coho that took the Spring gear in the morning. We also landed a 12 and 13lb Spring Salmon, but had three or four more Springs that were lost, one very large Salmon was lost near the boat, Erik will be back next year for a larger Spring.
Aug.28thAfternoon trip with regular guests Scott and Leigh, we went to the local afternoon hotspot, Otter Point. Soon after setting the gold and chrome Betsy flashers and green and plain glow anchovey teaser heads at the favoured 77 and 83ft on the downrigger we started hitting Springs. The guys played four Springs, landing two 14 and 20lbs. We saw many other boats catching fish, mostly on the outside, or in the deeper water 80ft and deeper. Water was calm, great fishing.
Aug.29th Fishing with Scott and Leigh again today, trolled the Otter Point area, and hit a big Spring Salmon early, but it got away. We continued to play and land three more Springs; 14,20,and 28lbs. Otter Point was hot with many boats hooking into large Spring Salmon, congradulations to Nick Romane for landing a huge 43lb Spring at Otter Point today. Weather became windy before noon, and was worse later in the afternoon.
Aug.30thFishing with Scott and Leigh west of Otter Point, small, short, morning bite time, very few fish caught. Trolled up to Sherringham Point, as we approached it from the east at noon we hit a nice Spring about 15lb that spit the hooks on Scott. We turned around on that piece of water and hit a nicer 26lb Spring that we landed. You missed it Wade. Downriggers have been working well at 95 and 105ft mid day.
Aug 30th 2REEL2 Bob was fishing Otter Point with Hal and his crew, who are back for more. Last year Bob helped Hal win the company Salmon fishing derby landing two large Springs in the last minutes of the derby. This year the boat saw less action playing a small Spring and a nice Coho. Great day for weather, calm sunny conditions.
Aug31st Fishing with Dwight,Brian,Julianna, west of Otter Point, slow day, one good strike late in the morning at Otter Point,as we were packing up.
AFTERNOON Fishing at Otter Point with Mark, Chris, Keith and Gloria, as the tide was coming in. Mark landed a scrappy 25lb Spring Salmon that hit on a green glow anchovey teaser head trolled behind a chrome Betsy flasher. Good afternoon bite, saw many boats get one fish.
Sept 1st Otter Point with Dwight and his crew, slow morning, saw some fish caught. Brian landed a good 21lb Spring in the afternoon, Dwight lost one Spring shortly after.Julianna played a nice big Coho to the boat, that we had to release. Good afternoon bite at Otter Point, with the incoming tide.
2REEL2 Bob was fishing with Betsy and family, slow morning but they landed one for the BBQ around 10lbs.
Sept 2nd Fishing with Dwight and his crew for the morning, slow, no fish.
Sept 3rd Fishing with regular guests Leyla and Ed at Possession Point. Had one good Spring on at 54ft on the downrigger first thing, that got away, and kept one small Spring we hit later. Saw two other Springs caught. Foggy calm day.
Sept 4th Rene and his son Marc fished Otter Point with me. Noticed many small Salmon being caught, some Coho but mostly Springs. We took one 10lb Spring that the guys planned on grilling that night. Released one wild Coho. Sunny clear day flat water.
AFTERNOON Fishing with Kevin,Jeff, and Doug at Otter Point, the afternoon bite came on for us, hooking into 5 hard hitting Spring Salmon landing 1 for dinner. The weather was calm and foggy until the wind came up, then it was clear and windy.
Sept 5th Friday Fishing with Marge and Sharon from Alberta, hooked into some large Springs at Otter Point. Fish seemed to hit all day. Played 6 nice Spring Salmon landing 1 again for the BBQ.
Sept 6thFished with Gene, Gino, Al and Dave. Played and landed 2 decent Springs 17 and 10 lbs. Had one other bite that didn't hook up. Great calm day, foggy morning, clear sunny sunny afternoon.
2REEL2 Bob was also fishing Otter Point with Leonard, Gio, Brent and Mike who had a good day trolling anchovies at Otter Point. They played 4 fish, releasing 2 wild Coho, and landing 2 X 10lb Springs. Saw 6 or 7 fish caught during the day.
Sept 7th Both boats were out fishing with the same group in the same area as previous. The morning was slow for our boat, no strikes, no fish.
2REEL2 had a better morning with 2 strikes that didn't hook up, and then a double header landing 2 Springs 15 and 16lbs. Did not see or hear about many fish caught. Perfect weather, sunny clear sky, warm sun, cool breeze. Bob was using a red mirror flasher, and Tiger Prawn chrome anchovey teaser head.

Good Fishing, Ron

Island Outfitters adds this: "HALIBUTHalibut fishing was GOOD near Sooke last week. Now that the salmon fishing has slowed up many anglers are trying for big flatties now. We just had the biggest Halibut ever weighed in at Island Outfitters this last week. Randy Ruttan and Kirk Dodsan caught the monster fish of a lifetime which ended up weighing 320 lbs!!!! We also heard of a few other smaller Halis caught out there from 25 to 35 lbs."

I'd like to hear the story too...hopefully it was caught on salmon tackle as a bycatch...7 hours of slow reeling on 20 lb test line... :D

Maybe it's just me but would anyone else here release a fish that big? I could never kill a hali that size. I once released a fish that was estimated at 280. Not a judgement but just curious if anyone else on this forum would have released her.

On a side note congratulations to the guys who caught it. This is a trophy fish of a lifetime.

likely comes down to our need for bragging rights and having a story to tell that people actually believe. You honestly can't take a good picture of a large halibut while keeping it alive - a picture of a giant head doesn't prove enough. We want to be able to tell the story of the 320 lb monster we caught without having people rolling their eyes at us. Unfortunately, killing it is the only way you can do that.

Now that's someone like me that would be faced with a once in a lifetime situation...but if these guys regularly catch big halibut, then I'd question the need to kill it...
