Best Halibut Rig !! - WCVI

Has anyone fished for Halibut (with success) at 4 mile straight out from Beale? That is as far as I dare go in my small boat. But would certainly like to give Halibut fishing a go. [?]

Picked up a hali at 190' with a 6" tomic spoon on bottom fishing
for springs.

Thanks F.D.! Been admiring your boat on this site for a few weeks. Hope to get one like it in the future! Tight Lines!:D

question for those of you that get "incidentals"....
What rod and line are you using? Are you using your standard mooching rod and reel with 30-40Lbs line? Must take a hell of a long time to play a 75Lbs hali on "light" gear?

We've landed them up to 60lbs on salmon gear no problem on 25lb test
You can't horse them, eventually they come up like a big sheet
of plywood. It's fun getting them in the boat without a poon [}:)]

I've never caught an incedental hali yet. I'm thinking of doing it (trolling bottom) on some of the inside spots in Barkley (I've got a 17.5 Hourston and don't feel comfortable going outside).

the biggest one (at 105 lbs), was tied up and bleeding in about 10 minutes. Caught it on 25 lbs and flasher/bait at 45'. That is not the norm, but it just did not fight.

Hello, FogDucker.

Your Hali rig description looks great!
Will you post a picture (or 2) of it for us please?

Thanks!

Roo.

p.s. we like to have many options for hali bait, one year a buddy was nailing them on one side of the boat with Berkeley tails while my octopus wasn't getting a sniff on the other side of the boat![?]

Hi Goodoutroo , I am heading up next week, I will take some photos for you , Yes Berkley Grubs, scampy's ( I like WHITE ) work great , I try to keep a few back ups on board , Octopus , Smelt, ANCHOVY , with these on board , we seem to do well , but the grub usually does it consistently !!especially when dogs are present, honestly,I nail my hali's with my salmon gear , right off bottom , I rarely use my hali gear, Red plaid flashers , 42.in leaders ( 40 - 50 lb test, )to a scented glow armytruck hoochie, that's just me though , others may have there personal preferences !!!cheers ,
