Barkley Sound Report

wetbeaver how come you did not post it three times like your last post ?

Got a little excited this morning, but i figured i would try doing it three times because when i only post it once nobody seems to answer me.And see after i posted it three times i got a bit within minutes.
THATS WHAT IM TALKING ABOUT!!!!:D

Maybe they are all scared (except slab) because they no we are going to catch all their fish! oh ya and win the derb

Hey Slab Seeker and TeamChachi,

I too was in the neighbourhood last week and had the same results for our fishing success. We had to work hard for our fish, had a couple of double headers (one with a 26 and a 25!) but alot of very slow times as well. Fished all the same Bamfield spots as you and saw both of you out there. We also tangled with the Mega cat (as with all big bullies he pushed us out of the way too)at Kirby Point. We had our best success at Pill Point, but also some som eaction at Whittlestone, Kirby and Beale. We were in the 26' Campion Toba with the Green bootstripe.

Just got word from a buddy at China Creek. Sounds like it is very, very, slow. Very few fish at the dock and lots of boys are heading out to Barkley. Bitterness reigns supreme.

Interesting to hear that the fish are all WAY offshore. If I had the right boat, I definitely would have gone out there. Unfortunately, I'm not a Saudi oil prince and that would have cost me $500 in gas.

I noticed that water temps in the sound and offshore were pretty high and I wonder if that is what is keeping the fish out there? I was seeing temps as high as 65F with 60-62 being pretty common.

Finaddict,

I remember your Campion. Nice boat. We fished Pill once in the afternoon on the way back from China Creek (had to run a couple of guys down there who were leaving - probably cost me $100 in gas). Didn't have any success but I heard it had been decent there at times. Right or wrong I didn't run around much to different spots like years past. Pretty much fished Kirby and some at Edward King. Like Teamchachi said, you need to be an oil prince to pay for the gas. I wasn't convinced that moving to another spot would be any better than staying put and waiting for a bite to come on. The way I saw it, my Yamaha 8 HP uses less gas than the big motor. If it hadn't been for the gas prices I would have beat my way 23+ miles offshore to get at that "hot" fishing.

LOL! Dunno what all this fuss about getting way out there is about [8)]

There is a mean pile of fish well</u> inside just now, several of my buddies had easy limits this am up to 38 pounds in the early, one landing 10 in the first 2 hours! And while I spent a LOT of the summer 25 miles out, I, for one, will be working right close range in the am!!

Good Luck in the Derby folks, the long-rangers are likely to need it! :D

Cheers,
Nog

Have fished everyweekend in Bamfield area this summer. Veeeeerrrryyy spotty. Even offshore, lots of Halibut { even one @ Kirby ? }Found the feed but very few fish. Am looking forwrd to the derby, have heard swale and Gibralter are hot. reports are not good from Fleming and Robbers pass, again right time, right place. Kirby has seen good action this year and we have found fish at Edward King. Zero at widdlestone and Brady ? The fish should be jumping in the boat this time of year, and lots of Mackeral. Found 7 Mile was spotty but 5 mile was very good the last 2 weeks. Several double headers and one triple. Nothing over 30 though. try the watermelon spoon with a gold flasher.

The biggest surprise for me was all the little 1 lb chinook rats! I was checking lines every ten minutes because the rats were so small I wouldn't always be able to tell that they were even on the line. It was crazy. I don't ever recall seeing so many tiny fish.

I have no doubt that some people are getting limits and big fish. But it requires being in the right place at the right time with the right lure in the water. Nothing like previous years where it didn't seem to matter what you used or where you went.

Last couple weeks up until today whittlestone has been on fire. Fish being caught consistently all day. Landed around 20 springs between saturday and sunday. A bit slower this weekend though. Still got into a decent amount of fish yesterday afternoon and this morning. Lots of seals around. They took 2 from us this morning. Not as many fish caught all around today. Now just gettin ready for the gong show this weekend.

So....Where is the winner comin from this year? Gonna be a Bamfield show? Or is one fo those forty pound black lone tree boots gonna take it?

What where you using for tackle at whittlesone? We are heading up on Saterday to Bamfield for a week. Years ago the real gong show was in Port Alberni. Im hoping bamfield hasn't gotten that bad. Are you entering the derby? We didn't enter about 7 or 8 years ago and my wife caught a 46lber just off of China Creek the first day of the derby. It was also her first springer. I think the fish would have finished second that year. I think we might spend the entry fee this time.

As usual anchovies have been the ticket. Yes Bamfield had been pretty busy and will be quite a show for the derby. Should quiet down nicely for the next couple weeks though when the rest of the springs and the coho come piling in.

ill be out there this year...in my 16 footer with a blown up motor and my kicker, ill be fishing around polly's coulsons lone tree in that area just look for a lil 16 footer with the tunes n a blowup doll on the bow spread wide open with a lucky can in her for good luck;) well im out lots werk to do tomorrow

cheers steelheadman[}:)]

You are crazy steely but what ever makes you happy and it brings you luck more power to you.

Chevy thanks for the info. We did great 4 weeks ago up at winter harbor using anchoves and a green e-chip head. It was the only thing that caught the springers all week. We caught 10 fish over 30 in the 5 days. We tried all the others spoons, squid, and plugs and not one bite. I'm hoping that the fish are in at bamfield. Do you brine your anchovies?
