Barkley Sound Cabins

I have had some issues with my cabin being broken into and vandalised in the past couple weeks. After talking with a couple other owners I see it was quite a spree. I'm wondering if there are any rumors floating around ? One person I talked with said his place was messed up pretty good they cooked a few meals, and zipped two sleeping bags together, I'm guessing a couple.
Normally I pass this sort of thing off as kids blowing off steam, but they actually cut my cabin loose . Good thing the anchor did it's job or this could have been really bad.

I feel for you guys having to worry about BS like that. It's pretty hard to say who is doing it without proof though. Not many people in the area this time of year... I guess all you can really do is buzz around the other cabins when in the area and see if it looks like anyones in em.

Put up a couple of Trail cams in strategic spots you may get lucky and get some pics of the guilty party.

Ya I've had the camera pointed at the cabin in the past and got a full card of seagulls and otters LOL. So I have been aiming it at the bay enterance and have caught the back of a couple boats and thats all I'm at liberty to say as I can't prove anything past that. I'm hoping this post might come up with some other information to add to the suspicions

Simple Security System

really loud siren(s) mounted discreetly in a high area( tree perhaps ) , powered by a small power supply ,couple of hidden motion sensors Inside , mini solar panel ta keep er charged up , a simple control ta shut er down after a set time ,If I was the trespasser , and heard the Alarm screamin OUTTA THERE , i wouldn't want ta take a chance that it is monitored , or ,maybe a neighbor is en route with a present for me ,

a security sticker on the main door , flashing led visible , usually moves them on to the next property..

NO , im not an ex thief lol . just had ta deal with a few in my day...

We unfortunately were broken into as well. Kids it looks like. I would say a couple from stuff stolen it had to be a guy/gal. The cabins across from us were also hit. Talked to another owner in Sunshine, they got hit also. Security system is probably the way to go. Just gets expensive. I would like to find a way to get some reliable pictures of the pukes so we can get the police to do something.

if it was my place Pat,
remote area like yours , I'd always be worried ,especially with the blood sweat and tears you put in it , unfortunately with today's society ,everything needs to be secured properly , the cops would not be able to prove $hit most likely , deter the little bastards , let them see ya have a security system , even a bright flashing led in ur window from ur dock would make them move on there way , most of the time lol,,, , its not that expensive , you were installing an inverter power supply anyway ? alarm draws squat when " Ready" mode,,

could find a basic security system cheap for you , can help ya wire it too...take a few hours...

You're probably right. Boys across the way have one, we should too. Can probably find a cheap, cheap unit. Like you say signage to back up the unit will probably help. I'm going to measure up and install some window and door coverings - like you say, make it a little more difficult and the bandits will just move along looking for an easy target.

Thanks for all the security tips hopefully this is a one shot deal and we can get on with life down there. Like I said I do have a camera set up and it has recorded some images I'm just not positive enough to actually point a finger. With some of the private messages I have recieved detailing some of the other cabins break ins etc. I am positive it is a couple man/woman the crappy pic shows two people in a tinny like boat. (open with outboard...yammy I think)
I don't want to be too quick to point fingers at kids on this one, we did that with all the stolen vehicles in Bamfield. Personally I feel kids would have stolen all the booze I had left down there not just the wine and Baileys.

New news!! RCMP determined that there was a couple who broke into the cabin at Friend Island and were living there and stealing from local cabins what ever they could to live on. Explains some of the things they stole. If you want to track down any missing items contact the Marine Section of RCMP in Port Alberni to see what they found. Apparently the cabin at Friend Island was well stocked and very neat and tidy so they were living there and had plans to stay.

Good to see that they were caught! As a cabin owner its always a bit of a worry. Things can be replaced but it's a strange feeling to know someone has been going through your place.....that's the worst part for me anyways? Hopefully it will be a quiet rest of the winter for everyone else out there.

Hopefully that is the end of it, but as you know the courts are into catch and release these days, so I expect they are walking the streets already.

Lets watch this case closely, I agree with the catch and release analagy. These are probably close relatives to the occupy Vancouver crowd, no responsiblilty and consequences.

As fishermen, we should definately watch and study how the justice system works and take lessons. Let's see, they catch their quary, and immediately release it. Or keep it in a livewell for a bit and heal it's wounds, medicate it's ailments, put it in touch with support groups and then release it back into a better environment for it's needs. Their quary is now more than willing to bite any hook it sees knowing it will be better off for it. If we as fishermen did this, we wouldn't even need rods, the fish would just jump in the boat.

Yes unfortunately it will be catch and release...they are probably working the sound now. No further updates from the RCMP - still waiting for the investigating officer to contact us.
