Barkley Sockeye Opening

Out to China Creek, on Saturday, with a buddy. 3 fish in the boat in first 5 minutes, 1 went back 5 minutes later, that was to small. 4th fish in the boat before we got that line back down, total of 15 minutes for the 4 fish. Headed out to Pill and Swale after that and had to work a bit harder. 2 springs and 1 pink (that we didn't realize until we got home). 7 fish total.

If they open the limits to 4 fish you will see Gillnets and seiners in there.. then very quickly there will be no fish for anyone. It takes days or up to a week to get any fish in there in any numbers to have start catching them regularly.

If the seiners and gillnetters get in there I hate to think of what will happen to the sport fishery 4 years from now..I really don't want to look at another couple years of closure.

IMO

You go girl!!! What she said X2

Maybe it's time us sporties learned to be satisfied with a little bit less meat for the freezer. How about keeping a little conservation in mind, so that we don't have to wait years for the next opening. It never ceases to amaze me the greed factor that takes over once there is a Sockeye opening. The river banks turn into a floss festival, it's embarrasing to see what passes for sport fishing these days.

Fishing this year at Alberni is the first time I have stacked rods, but am spending too much time untangling bird's nests. The 2 sets of dummy flashers are no problem, but I would like to know what is an appropriate distance above them for the first rod, and how far up for the second rod. Also, at what length from the downriggers for each of the rods? Any info would be hugely appreciated!

Here's what I do for stacking:

Dummy flasher on 5 foot lead on the cannonball. Drop just enough that it rolls and stays under the surface (about 2.5 feet) - run terminal out so it is within 4 or 5 feet behind the flasher, and attach downrigger release. Drop 10 feet, repeat, drop another 10 feet and repeat again (Yes, 3 rods a side). Repeat on the other side, and stagger depths - 6 feet difference at the balls.

Only had but a single tangle with this technique all season (quickly touching wood!).

Hope that helps...

sounds pretty good and busy with 3 per side.

on each side, we send out one dummy 10 feet behind the boat at each cannonball. drop it 10 feet and then clips and attach lines so they are about 12-14 feet behind boat. drop another 10 feet and do the same. so 2 rods per side and we have never had any troubles... and we have alwasy done fairly well with limits and no tangles!

good luck

Well... Still no updates from DFO on the Sockeye opening. If there isn't anything posted on their site by 6:00 tonight it's probably safe to say the daily limit of 2 stays through the weekend.

Lots of people saying the limit is 4 and there is a commercial opening next week - but no backup to that, just talk.

2 each is fine with me. Anyone have any recent reports? We will probably be at Hocking tomorrow morning, or maybe Dunsmiur.

Well, good thing they upped the sporties limit to 4, eh. [xx(]

Seiners back in the canal again, great. Maybe 2 a day doesn't sound so bad now does it. As they say, careful what you ask for you might just get it. Here goes the free for all, bye, bye, restoration of a healthy run again.

Fill the dam tub!

nope..islandgirl is not a peterson..but kinda p_ssed 4 a day now means open season on the poor sockeye run when it has been closed for the last 2 years...so much for the future 4 years

Yeah, the DFO are nothing if not predictable. I hate the seiners they're going to hoover the inlet clean of fish again. I sure hope they don't let them in the inlet for the springs this year.

Long day yesterday! Left Central saanich 3:00 AM out on the grounds by around 7:00 AM. I think it was called Ten mile Pt? never fished up there before anyway,16 fish Kept four smaller ones released.Back at ramp by 7:15 PM.
Back home by 10:30 PM. We all had a blast! (except for when it blew its butt off for the last hour or two of fishing)

Sockeye definitely not the biggest.....but awesome fish!

Cheers

I guess I'll provide my own update. Fishing wasn't bad this past weekend, I made it out Saturday and banged a couple short of my limit (4 people) by 9:00. Fished China Ck area but most boats were around Cous Ck. It wasn't as fast and furious as previous outings but steady. They're definitely getting abit fussy. Survey girl at the dock said this weekend was better than last.

Area 23-1

Recreational fishers are advised that the tidal portion of the Somass River
will close to recreational fin fishing as described below. In consultation with
the Area 23 Salmon Harvest Committee, all advisors including participating SFAC
advisors agreed that current situation at Paper Mill Dam regarding non
compliance issues warrant the closure of this fishery at this time.

Effective midnight Monday July 13 that portion of the Somass River from the
tidal boundary at Paper Mill Dam seaward to a line commencing at a boundary
sign in upper Alberni Harbour situated at 49°14.19 north latitude and 124°50.23
west longitude then through the southern most point of Hoik Island then to the
flashing green light at the mouth of the Somass River then due east to a
boundary sign on the opposite shore will close to all fin fishing effective
12:01am Tuesday July 14th.
