Barkley Sockeye Opening

out yesterday morning... limit of 4 within 20 mins... went 4 for 6 and missed 2 hits...

when we see a hit, we set the hook fast and just start reeling.. dont play them... just get em too the boat ASAP!!!!

was out there saturday and sunday by 430am. limits in the boat by 7am and 730 am (there were 4 of us in the boat). pretty solid fishing up near nahmint.

ran out to pill point after the limits and managed 5 coho and a mid teens spring to top of the days.

beautiful weather and great fishing...

That's why I sold my electric downriggers and went with manuals.

Take only what you need.

Huh?

Buddy gave me an update and said he was a skunkfest this morning. That said he got out late and said it was a bit sloppy to run to mactush. He fished CR and saw only a couple landed. Not a very salty skunk JP:D

News this evening said there was a B& B owner from Bamfield killed outside his B&B by some fisherman on the weekend??!! Anybody hear about this?

No Rigours

Getting into Alberni Wed evening and hoping to hit the Inlet early Thursday on our way out to Bamfield for 4 days. Sounds like we should hit Mactush or Nahmit at first light. Any fresh reports?

Cheers

We're doing the exact same thing. Maybe we'll see you at the launch on Thursday morning or on the water up in Bamfield. What's your boat? I'm in a 20' Trophy.

the local news highlighted Port Alberni sockeye fishing last night, the mayor of Port mentioned something about the limit being increased to 4 per day starting July 1. Anyone of insight into this or is this just a dream?

reforecast July 2...possible changes at that time. I wouldn't hold your breath...with no commercial opportunities I doubt they'll increase the rec limits.

Yes, I too have heard that the limit will go to four on July .1. [:p]
This rumor came from a reliable source on the sport fishing advisory board. Personally I think that DFO is way out on the numbers this year and there is way more fish than what they think. Judging from the numbers of fish that are in the River and the Inlet we are in for a great year of Sokeye fishing. Tight Lines.

There is inly 23,000 fish in the river and 51,000 estimated in the canal. Doesnt seem very high considering the run was once over a mill

Wasn't the run over two mil back in the day? Seems like everyone's confusing fishable numbers with a healthy run size. When I first started fishing the canal there were so many jumpers you couldn't possibly count how many you saw in a day. They'd be thumping off the hull there were so many. If you had a boat with low gunnels they were literally jumping in the boat.

Hello, all.

Limit by 5:30am today, and wasn't alone in success.
Started off with a double header.
Hocking to Hook.

Business Time: the sparkly truck produced 2/3 of our hits.
Finally put the 4" Peetz to use on a very flexible rod, what a hoot!
Heading up again Friday a.m.

As to the chatter about numbers, when you see them rising and jumping as far as you can see for 360degrees, there are surely thousands upon thousands out there right now?
Plus I had to turn the finder's beeper off because it was just annoying.
Or, maybe there are just a few hundred poppin' bennies?

China Creek is still almost deserted compared to 4 years ago.
Road was graded this morning.

Take care out there...

Smiley.

Smiley,

Nice work. Did you go solo?

I will be testing the sparkly truck Saturday. Might take the day off work Friday instead, haven't decided yet.

Will be leaving here at 3:00 am with both kids.

sounds like its still better farther out...I was in the China Creek area this am. No jumpers around and not many fish being caught. Left with a limit at 6:00, but it was slow.

Twenty years ago, the inlet was full of sockeyes, when I saw many sockeyes jumping from April to October.I wondered which lure was good to catch a sockeye salmon while pink hootchies weren't developed. A few sportsfishermen had success using pink hootchies to catch many sockeyes in late 80's, then a famous sockeye sportsfishery was born.
