Barkley Sockeye Opening

Oh another question hows the size of the sockeyes are they small like usual or are the healthy, I only ask because Im debating wether to fish Port or Campbell River for Socks this year generally Ports are smaller and living in Courtenay its a little cheaper to go to Campbell River?

Stupid question here but where is Cous in relation to China Creek or the Boy Scout Camp or Franklin? Fished around there every year but never heard of Cous or I cant remember or Im getting Altimers

When you are at China Creek marina, you can see the opposite side of the marina (look west), look right side at the bay with log booms, called Cous Bay or Cous Creek.

Hello.

Could easily have waterskied the inlet this morning.
Too much debris for barefooting, though [8D]

Myself and 3 kids today.
Hootchies in at 4:45 at Hocking.
Plan was to set the hook, give the rod to a kid.
5am, 1 quick one to warm the crew up.
5:10 am, double header, dad netting, kids steering (sorta).
A double header with experienced adults is exciting, try it with 2 9yr olds and a 12 year old!!! AWESOME FUN!
5:15am, tap tap tap nothing there (I count these as hits).
5:23am, another single in the cooler, ratio 4 for 5.

Okay, plan change, kids do everything while dad steers and videos.
Went 2 for 17 over the next 3 hours with the young crew, but what the hey, 6 fish and countless firedrills was fun!
The major bite is definitely gone by 6am from what I've seen over my 4 trips in the last 9 days.

I did try to pop the release once but broke the main line!
Brought the rigger up and there is the gear with a sockeye keeping pace with us!
So, I hollered at my daughter to get the net while I grabbed the line and (you gotta try!) pulled the line in by hand - and she netted it perfectly!

The oldest girl wouldn't get out of bed this am so she is outside filleting and vacuum sealing right now :D

Get out there, it is hot!

CC Charters, they are all over the map for size, but you'll get enough to the boat to be selective about your retention if you wish - just consider the mortality profile of fishing that way.
We keep anything legal, the small ones are the best to marinate and put on the bbq.
I'd LOVE to know how to target sox off CR, any tips?
My wife loves the civilized nature of Brown's Bay camping so if we could get sox there it would be really nice!

The sparkly truck wasn't producing as well as bubblegum today.
My son wanted to try a googly dude today so we did, and it caught one.

Smiley out.

ah that is great smilie! what a great experience for the kids. Lots of action and no worries about trials and errors.

Glad to hear it is still hot. I should be pulling into CR on Sat night.

Does anyone know what the latest time you could show up and still check-in, launch your boat, and get moorage?

Linz... from HEL ? - must be
How are ya, didn't here from you today, did you make it out?

Thought we would start out at Cous this morning and after 20 minutes of fishing we realized we should be at Hocking so we ripped up there at 40 mph. Cous to Hocking in 10 min isn't bad.

Fish on right away - and it was the sparkly truck with a coho special flasher. We changed up shortly after so the rest of the fish were on pink hooch. Will have to try it again another day Smiley.

Ended up with 7 in the cooler today.

What at nightmare at the China Creek ramp coming back! really low tide, and no ramp left to get your trailer in, but we managed.

Let's hope they keep it open past the 2nd, cause it's great for the kids, and my addiction.

Hey BT - what is this talk about keeping open past the 2nd? I thought they were going to increase the limit to 4 in July!

Nathan, it is that Linz. Sorry didn't read correctly, thought you were going up tomorrow. Good to know fish are still plentiful. Fished the rock slide across from CC last Saturday with Backatit, maybe head down towards Nahmint tomorrow. Good to know about the ramp at CC, I'll put in at the river instead.

They will reforcast on the 2nd, and depending on their numbers they decide if they will extend the opening, increase daily limits, or close it.

Seems to be alot of Sockeye out there - they were jumping everywhere today, and the constant reports of people with daily limits.

My guess is they extend the opening but with the same 2 daily limit. But we find out on the 2nd.

Linz,

Yes, I would avoid that ramp at low tide, we were there at 9:00 and it was like that. The low today was 0.8 ft at 10:00. Other times the ramp is fine, just plan around the low tide.

Hey All,

Finally got out to Alberni Inlet and had a hoot! My wife, son and I landed 5 out of maybe 15 good hits [:I]. Bit of a learning curve again, it's alot like chum fishing...everybody gotta know their jobs. Had 'er down pat by the end of it, but by then the bite had died off (8am or so). Took some time to find the right depth, while everybody around us were catching we were watching in awe and wondering what the hell we were doing wrong:(. Turns out I was too deep, seems like 40-60' was where they were today. Took a long time to get the last two and never did get the final one. Caught most on MP15s or the pink/light blue w/ the white head squirts.

Had so much fun we are going to do it again tomorrow morning. Left the boat and trailer at China Creek and bobtailed home. Gonna be another early morning [B)], but what the heck.

Thanks again for all the help.

Scott

BT - Yup, took your advice and went to Hocking, thanks for the tip[8D]. Tomorrow we plan on fishing for Soxs for 2 hours max and then head out to see what the outside looks like. A fella at the cleaning tables said it is great fishing for Chinook/Coho and there are piles of humpback whales all around. Maybe make it a day of fish and pics...:)

Fishspoon - our last two were after the bite, around 10am and they were realy shallow, around 25'at the narrow spot before Hocking. Caught the first shallow one while running the downrigger back down after a miss and the downrigger was reading 40' (got my first line 15' above the dummy) so I guess they can be anywhere, eh?

Cheers,
Scott

yup, if the sockeye sportsfishery is good, sockeyes are everywhere. you said: narrow spot-I think it is Sproat Narrows. Great scenery over there. Enjoy sockeye fishing. I will go sockeye fishing soon and put the sockeye fillets in freezer for bbq.

Hello, all.

Something that I forgot to mention...I have had 2 solid hits while retrieving my cannonball!
Went 1 for 2.
It is almost like fishing for coho!
What happens is this: pop the shallow rod, turn the rigger on, watch the deep rod start bouncing on the way up!
The first time it happened I didn't know what was going on :D

The last time I was out I started lowering and raising the cannonball to trigger some action (this was after 6:30am - bite was off). Of course I couldn't make a hit happen!
And then, as I was prepping to head home, guess what? Another hit!

My $0.02: I'd like to see the limit kept at 2.
There are still plenty of boats out there...
It encourages us to take more people, and thus introduces more to the beauty of the sport fishery!
More sport fishers = more support for sport fishing!

Smiley.

aYup, there is a few around, and a lot of them hungry for the bite.
Me, I'm happy with 2 a day. Run estimate appears from a distance to be a little better than forecast. Take into account removal from all sides thus far, and escapement is far</u> from realized!

Smallish aside, if the run forecast is upgraded much more, we will see legal gillnets.

Cheers,
Nog -
