Barkley/Barclay in May?

Hello everybody,

I'm new to the forum. My wife and I have a weeks vacation the third week of May. We are looking for some Good places to cruise and fish for this time. We have a 19ft Arima and like salmon the best but also have fun fishing for 'buts and lingcod.

Where would you go?

We thought we might try our first trip upto Bamfield. How is it up there during mid-late May? Is there any fish inside the sound? We also don't want to trailer the boat on gravel roads so would it be better to put in at port alberni or Ucuelet?

Launch in port alberni for sure you don't want to beat your boat and trailer on the gravel road.Fishing barcley sound in may can be hit and miss I have seen it where there is absolutely nothing for salmon in the sound in may and other years it has been good.You can fish offshore weather cooperating if theres nothing inside though.

Not sure about the fishing in May, but September is a hoot for coho. As for the previous comment about 'beating your boat on the gravel', you don't have to if you spend an extra 20 minutes travelling in. I've had many outfits fly past me on the way in & have seen them with damage at the Nook when we arrive. I've been going to Poett's Nook for 15 years & my boat & tariler is none the worse for wear.

Yes May...

I would much rather get up there in late August but we have another trip planned for the mouth of the Columbia River. In september it is my sister in law's wedding SOOO May it is.


We are thinking about this as sort of an exploratory/cruising trip. I was thinking about launching at one port and sort of doing a circuit around the sound for the week with perhaps camping one night. I don't think my wife would really want to run 25 miles to Swiftsure so if we do fish it would probably be on the inside.

There is a salmon run in the Barcaly Sound in March but I havn't had much luck in May. There is a run in th Knight Inlet in May that is hit and miss but are big fish.

You could stay at Telegraph Cove and then have a shot at good prawning, crabbing, and the halibut, lingcod is closed til june 01 though. I would like to hear of some other runs in May if anyone would care to share??/ Peege

Motor out to Bamfield from Port Alberni and save flushing dust out of every boat cranny for the next year.

You won't need your vehicle once out there anyway.

Fishing for Columbians 20-25miles out from cape beal can be decent in May or not so. June is better bet early and august and sep are nearly a sure thing.

Farther north would be better...say port hardy or winter harbor.

If the Bamield may springs are like the one we get early in Renfrew, they are well worth the run!

i have spent the last 2 yrs in bamfield the wk going in to mayday long wkend, seems to be good just off the harbor(forget the name of the point), not too many boats but everyone out seems to hit fish, and if you hit the nice weather like we last yr( a whole wk no rain just sun), well good times , just remember limited services that time of yr, gas was only open 3 of 7 days we were there

the road to bamfield isn't as bad as everyone is saying. you just need to slow down and take it easy. and well i guess offshore would be your best bet for springs, but if you wanna stay on the inside, well then you would probably need to find the bait. go into gone fishin or some other type of fishing store b4 you go out. just get a fishing report from one of the poeple working there. they are always up to date on the fishing from the local guides. so yea have fun!
i've hit some nice fish in april and may over at diplock island. fish deep! 80-125 feet. coyote spoons or herring strip.
ps - you'll catch just as many fish on herring strip as you will on anchovies. and NO BLOWN OUT BELLY'S!!!!

We are also considering Sooke for this time of year. I heard there are some big springs around Sooke in May. Does this make it hard to find accomidations?
