Bamfield Poett Nook Reports Spring/Summer 2012

Yes it is that time for the banks to light up. I just haven't heard a good report or had a reason to go there. Lots of springs in the sound and Hali's not far off. Have even been getting Hali's near Kirby. A few Coho showing at the Bamfield, Kirby, Cree and Mearse too.
 
The fishing has really been great on the wall this past week, all the way down to Poetts. I fished it a couple nights ago, had a ton of action. One rod anchovy other rod spoons. Have to say anchovy out fished the spoons 4 to 1. I seemed to have better luck with big fish from 80 to 110ft depth.
 
The past few years in June have been insane offshore, but haven't been out this year. Will be out on Monday for the week, 7 guys 3 boats. Can't wait.
 
Pill Pt. was hot!

My brothers and I were out to Bamfield and Pill Pt. Wednesday and Thursday. Fishing on Wednesday morning was cold, wet and pointless. However, in the aft. & Thursday, down at Pill was fantastic - lots of scrappy smaller Springs 10 - 15 lbs. We released a lot of small fish ~ 50 cm. Limits boated both days in a couple of hours. Smoking and canning today.

A gillnetter set from the Point, right across our "stroll" (just to **** us sporties off???) Was that part of the ceremonial`fishery? :rolleyes:

i remember seabeam from the early 90's with i think it was murray. is ther still campsites on the hill and docks down below
 
Seabeam has new owners and they have made some great improvements over the last few years. Check out the website for info, heading there next week for the weekend

some guy i know stayed at the beam last week they said that there has been some great improvements over the last year and its hard to beat the feeling and atmosphere of the beam i love having a beer on the deck its hard to beat!!!!!!!!!!!

Awesome report Foxsea. Looks like you found some rain...no surprise in this early season fishing, but at least you found some good fishing too!

Somass Sockeye Stock Assessment Update

Pre-season forecast:
Somass (Great Central and Sproat) 700,000 (range: 500,000 to 1,000,000);
Henderson Lake sockeye outlook ~ 25,000

Escapement to June 13: ~ 20,000 (2000 Great Central, 18,000 Sproat Lake)

Test Fishery: June 11-12: Estimate 10K inside 10-mile Point; 15K outside
Expected Somass Stock Composition: 47% Great Central, 53% Sproat Sockeye
Expected Somass Age Composition: 36%, 51%, and 13% for age 42, 52, 53 / 63 adults, respectively.
First in-season reforecast: June 28 (Preliminary Review June 21)

Catch Estimate: ~ 69,500 adults
Port Alberni Tsu-ma-uss Economic Opportunity fishery - 56,000
Maanulth First Nations Domestic harvest - 2000
Commercial Gillnet - 11,500
Recreational - 1,200
NEXT WEEK'S FISHING PLANS:

First Nations
Tsu-ma-uss (Hupacasath ,Tseshaht)-The First Nations have reduced fishing effort due to high catch rate.
Gill-nets - Sunday noon to Monday night 8 pm; 32 hours.
Communal Drag Seine - Papermill Dam Thursday to Saturday 6 am to 2 pm.

Maa-nulth - The harvest plan includes contracting of designated Area D Gill-netters to harvest sockeye. These vessels will be displaying Maa-nulth identification flags.

Commercial
Area D Gill - net fishery will operate 14 hours from 6 am. To 8 pm Tuesday June 19th in the same areas as the June 12th fishery, from the Bamfield line to the Pocahontas line.

Area B Seine - fishery planned for June 25th. There will be a closed area for seines as recommended by the recreational sector. This area is subject to adjustment by the Area 23 Salmon Harvest committee, depending on sockeye abundance in-season. The initial seine closed area will be bounded in the north by a line from Dunsmuir Point to the pilings north of China Creek and, in the south by a line drawn from Hocking Point due easterly to the opposite shore.

Recreational
Fishing continues at 4 per day in Alberni Inlet except for the tidal portions of Somass River which is to 2 per day with no night fishing.

Many thanks! The net is a Gibbs from Gone Fishin'. ~$100. C.T. may have them, too. Good reach, gentle, easy to release fish without beating them up. Most fish we release by turning the hook before netting but sometimes mistaken ID: "That's a wild." - "No it's hatchery." - "Uh - you're right, it's wild." lol
 
Back in Port, after hitting the monsoon rains out near Pill today. Our rain gear couldn't hold up to the punishment & with no cover for our boat, we took off back home just after we nailed a nice 15lb spring. There were lots of fish on the sounder and saw some guys catching. Diplock was best for us, and heard a report from the dock in Port that someone had brought in 7 springs by 11:30am (from either Kirby or Diplock).
 
Headed out from Port last night. Picked up 1 small Spring at Sanford. Tied up in Robbers Pass. Fished Bamfield this morning and boated 1 more small Spring and released a couple. Rain gear failed on me as well and I got soaked to the skin. Tied up at Grappler for lunch and a snooze. When we woke up the monsoons still hadn't abated so at 3:30 we decided to head for home By 7:30 we were back in Nanaimo, boat unloaded and sitting in the Hot Tub.
Lets hope next weekend brings some hot Sockeye fishing in the canal. Maybe I'll get new rain gear for Fathers Day tomorrow.

Didn't matter what raingear a guy had on. That was bloody wet.

Todays gonna be just as much fun by the look of it... LOL.

Thank sweet jebus there are a few fish to be had.
 
Should take my rain gear from work in future. Helly Hansen rubber gear. That or buy a set to keep in the boat! You'd think that I'd learn!

We got soaked by the monsoons as well..EVERYTHING was soaked... fishing was good though..fished Kirby on saturday from all day..1 hatch coho and 3 hatch springs and one wild spring... biggesr being 15lbs...we were palnning to stay until sunday aswell but made a run for it sat afternoon..
 
Heading to Bamfield on Friday. In nutshell, what are the limits inside and outside the sound?
