The spawn on kelp fishery is a far better practice than the sac roe fishery bar none. However, the central coast herring stock continues to languish and the Helsuik take 300-400 tons of roe in a season... so I see the closure as a knee jerk, but the FN was probably seeing the dollar signs rather than the fish first. For 2024 they're capped at 200 tons for the spawn on kelp fishery.
Also, by allowing 'locals only' commercial fisheries we can break the strangle hold that salmon farms have on jobs in these remote stretches. Thats just my opinion though.
