The next meeting of the Area 14 SFAC will be held at the Courtenay Fish and Game clubhouse on next tuesday Nov 15th, at 7pm. The Chair is attempting to get a number of DFO people to attend that can address a VARIETY of concerns. If you are attending and want specific issues tackled, please PM me and I will pass them on to the Chair.

Also- if you need directions , PM me.

Thanks
Bryan

Hope they discuss this Herring Quota issue? Why are they doubling the Quota? This yr it was good to see more firecracker herring in the bellies.

Yes-- all the SFAC meetings are open.... Even the ones held during the day. This evening one is meant to give those an opportunity who cant attend a day meeting to ask their questions from the DFO people attending.

Lots of questions that need to be answered right now-- including the herring fishery, and the halibut issue. As I understand it, the Kamp halibut process is working its way through DFO in Ottawa. We were promised options before the new year.

Hope we can get some new faces to attend.....

Well here is my synopsis

Lots of chum came back to most rivers. Big Q had a huge coho return (17K) the puntledge not so much (2,400) the puntledge also missed there escapement on springs by 1000 or (20%). Am i the only guy that doesnt give a **** about chum? A motion was made for retnetion of 2 coho one of which could be unmarked which everyone in the room voted for.

The dfo guy agreed there is a pretty high chance that the herring fishery will hurt our resident stocks, but right now its inclusive so "we'll see"

The commercial guys said that just because we are allowed to take that many tons (30k total, 6 of in the winter and the residents) doesnt mean they will. He thinks they will take more like 2500 which is still 800% more then they took last year (300k) I expressed that given there track record im not so confident that if they have the ability to catch and the markets are there, they will leave fish in the ocean.

The halibut issue. not much has changed. other then we went over by about 250,000lbs. There was a motion put foward that we instill a limit of 10 halibut per year per guy to show greater accountability for our sector. it passe 6-4.

Lots of we''ll just have to see's

How do they come up with the 250,000 lbs over stat? Inquiring minds would like to know.

Is it really a group of folks that meet once in a while determining our sportsfishing regulations? Sure there is lot's of talk on the boards etc. but really is it that group of 10-20 that makes the decisions. I have gotten emails from folks that I gave my email address to with regards to the meetings and the minutes etc. I appreciate that. I just thought that the process was more open. How does one make the process more open? I feel that many recreational anglers should be more informed about the proposals.

I realize as a responsible angler one should attend the meetings etc. and get more involved but that is not the reality for alot of anglers. There are thousands and thousands of us and there are 10-20 people making the decisions for us. How do we make these proposal's of the decisions more transparent to the general angling community?

Cheers,
Sculpin
