Are Underwater Boat Lights legal?

Saw an ad for LED lights that affix to the hull of boats below the water line.

Think they were "Lifeform" brand .

Are they legal here in B.C.?

Or does DFO consider they could be used as fish attractor at certain times/certain days etc.?

I read it was illegal to use as attractant but that was for prawning or shrimping. I cant find where I read it tho lol. Might have been in the book not the website. Dfo def needs to break down there website, its to convoluted.

The way I read the light laws is that any form of lighting is illegal unless the light is on the fishing line and within one meter of the hook. According to the Nanaimo DFO office, any other form of lighting is an illegal device including boat and dock lights.

I am wondering if they are going to change that however- or at least relax it. So far, no fuss has been made about the glow in the dark cannon balls. They are not within one meter of the hook and certainly not on the fishing line, but they do emit an artificial light.

Next week, Iwill be taking a new product to that office for legal review and will ask them again about boat lights while I am there.

What about glow flashers for that matter? I think they mean lights, not glow gear. Balls and flashers must be ok.

What about flashers that have water activated strobe lights? :)

After I obtained a patent on this concept, I had the DFO examine the flashers I built and all met approval dependent upon the use and application. So, used wrong and it is not good, but used within the confines of the law, they are legal. Kind of like weapons- guns, knives, baseball bats..... it is a legal device until used outside the law.

I considered this, too- the difference between glow and actual lights. But, the legislators apparently did not. They use the term "artificial light" as defined as any form of light other than the light provided by the sun. Since reflective material uses natural light, they are exempt from scruntiy.

I also had a long sit-down with a few members of the DFO regarding other concepts I have that are waiting on patent approvals. As the law currently stands, there are no laws exsisting or proposed regarding these. A couple phone calls and some emails with the Ottawa rulers confirmed the new items are legal in every way under any circumstance.

I think the LifeForm LED lights were nevr meant to be used as an aid to fishing.......they were made to "doll" up the boat
at night and go "Hollywood" for parties, dockside socials and the like....but they are meant to be applied below the waterline if one desires..

But then I thought of fishing regs.....and figured "whoa..wait a minute...".

You mean deck a boat like this one?? This particular boat belongs to a friend back in Georgia. It is his charter boat. Though mainly used as an inshore charter for trout, flounder and redfish, he often takes it offshore. He is plotting the submerged lights now and is thinking to use different colors aimed different directions under the boat.

If your boat were lit up like this, of course that would be legal. There is enough light on his boat to illuminate a large area around the boat, too, without installing lights below the waterline.

I've just finished installing lights like this in my boat. Even put in a remote on a keychain to turn them on and off. I put blue in the back under the gunnels and just above the door and clear in the cuddy.

Same concept, yes. But vastly different. What is done there is lights such as ours are simply mounted into a flasher body. This creates more drag and weight. The ones I have been building have the electronics built into the flasher blade. Less drag, less weight and better balance. I'm not knocking what he did by any means. When I first started fooling around with the concept, I did the exact same thing and have since revised it several times.

how bout a set of these...

I saw several boats in Florida with those type of lights. If you could convince the DFO that you aren't using them as attractants, you would be OK I would think. But, then, I haven't rifled through boating regs so I really could not say. But very definately bad butt.
