Vaccine update for Jan 13, 2021

Looks like the next shipment Jan 11-17 of 208,650 doses of Pfizer has been delivered and put into inventory. (BC data lagging)

All through this pandemic the imagery has been the same from ON, QC and AB: daily briefings with the premier front and centre. In BC, the premier appears maybe once a week, when covid issues intersect with the wider work of government. The messaging is quite clear: Dr Henry and Minister Dix lead the fight against the pandemic.

The other premiers can't give up the reins even though they have experts in place. I haven't looked at the credentials of the PHOs and health Ministers of other provinces, but surely they're more qualified than Ford, Kenney or Legault.

In BC of course, we have the good fortune to be led by a bona fide infectious diseases specialist with field experience in SARS, MERS and Ebola outbreaks. We are equally fortunate to have political leadership willing to let her lead. Not often you see a high level politician consciously allow someone else to take control on a major issue and assign themselves a support role instead. Effective delegation is supposed to be a fundamental skill for anyone purporting to be a leader in business or government, but it's not very prevalent in the COVID fight across our country. I think it's a key reason for the relatively smooth ride BC has had in the pandemic so far.

I also watch the update from New York state from time to time. They said in they update last friday that after April 16th they have no guarantee on when vaccine shipments will come. That seems to also be consistent with what BC has said that After March 29th its unclear on what to expect for shipments.

That leads me to believe that there is a significant manufacturing bottleneck after those dates and hence the uncertainty.

Hopefully canada approves the oxford vaccine soon as that one is fairly easy to manufacture and distribute,

Anything above 90% utilization is good so its glad to see vaccine jabs have caught up to supply.

Good to hear that it is a consistent issue and that it wasn't a mistake or error by the Canadian governments. Hopefully they can get production up and other vaccines. I have been quite impressed with how quick they caught up. I recall some extreme negativity on here just before Christmas on where we were at, however, at this point it seems we have done a pretty good job using what we have on hand.

yeah its amazing what happens when there is political pressure to speed it up. When people look at the numbers and start to express concerns and then those concerns are expressed in media. That then translates into Justin Trudeau our prime minister speaking out saying province are being slow and then our provinces suddenly speeding up.

That or it just takes a little time to get nurses trained up on administering the particular vaccine and getting things setup properly. I really have no idea on cause and effect. Probably doesn't matter at this point, they are getting them vaccinated now.
 
Looking at where we are now. Let capita Canada is way behind many countries in vaccination rates. That’s not being negative. It’s called facts. April beyond looks better but still looking to end of September / October before “herd immunity” is reached

I'm not sure about the oxford vaccine. Its efficiency is not as good as the Mnra vaccines. 70% is still OK, but when my loved ones get the chance to get vaccinated I would rather them get a vaccine with 95% efficiency. While oxford is better than nothing, having a vaccine that is ~25% less effective is not ideal.

Perhaps high risk folks getting the Pfizer & moderna vaccines & folks under 50 with no comorbidities get the oxford?

I'm looking forward to seeing results from the J&J vaccine. It's a single shot that has potential for high quantity manufacturing. We should see results end of January or Early February.

Did anyone else see the updated results from the Chinese vaccine (Sinovac).? Brazil released its data from thier trial & it was only 50% effective... Of course China claims it's as good as Pfizer and Moderna with out showing any data. But that's what the Chinese government dose.

I'm so glad Canadas original deal with China feel through.. While I love the pepole from China, I dont have any love for the regime in place. #freethe2michaels

Are we though. Last I checked we were middle of pack. There seems to be a few outliers doing way better.

The best approach for protecting everyone’s health will require us to provide different vaccines to different people according to need and availability.

I listened to an interesting piece the other day on the Oxford vaccine in which they found that the claimed lower efficacy related to averaging numbers across two studies, which applied the vaccine differently.

Apparently - and obviously I'm just paraphrasing scientists here, I can't actually offer any original knowledge on this - the trial in which subects were given a single dose showed an efficacy about equal to the two MRNA vaccines. Efficacy dropped when people were given a second dose, so the trial in which people got two doses showed something like 60% effectiveness and the numbers were averaged in the reporting.

The speculation was that the second dose was using up enough of the immune system's resources in finding and attacking the "virus" contained within the vaccine, that people were rendered temporarily a little more vulnerable to being colonized by the actual virus out in the wild.

So it may be, according to the biologists I was listening to (and they pointed out that they are biologists, one is a bat researcher but they're not virologists or immunologists, just scientists in a vaguely related field who are capable of looking at the literature more so than laypeople) that the Oxford vaccine, if administered in a single dose, is actually just as good as the other two.

I have no reason to think the other two are bad or anything, I'm not trying to make an argument for or against anything here, I just found it to be interesting information. The doctors I know who are really up on this stuff are perfectly fine with the MRNA vaccines so I'm sure that's fine, but if the performance is similar and the logistics are easier, it might be worth having it all on hand.
