I was just reading some reports and looks like the algae is back. Wasn't it later last year ? Anyone have any tips on fishing during this bloom ?

David from Predator Charters mentions it in his latest report. Vancouver Harbour all the way up to Secret Cove. Clogs lines.

Ah, I see. Had to deal with those blooms from time to time off the West Coast. Usually find that the springs will orient to the edge of where the bloom starts and the cleaner water. Often just up under the "cover" of the bloom. And found good luck using brighter colored terminals / flashers - Glow noticeably producing very well under these conditions.

Hope that helps...

Cheers,
Nog

Hey Brisco....care to cut and paste the report on this forum? I didn't get his report.

F.M., I think I would need his o.k. to cut and paste but here are the highlights. March 2- Grace, Hit a 16lb. red on a flamin hans/flasher @ 175' in 185' moved to flats off dockgot 19lb. on anchovy 115' in 130' water. There are a couple of other reports from his associate but no fish. I don't even know where the flats are. There is mention of the algae for the past week. If anyone wants to get his reports you can e-mail him and he will set you up.

Ah..ok..that's where you're gettin' them from. The "top secret info" page. Gotcha.

Yeah, the top secret page. David is a great guy and spends a lot of time on recording and plotting bite times and tides in the local waters. He does charge for the reports but for the amatures like myself this info is well worth the price.

Yep. I've heard that. I've never purchased Dave's information before.
And in all fairness to Dave, I won't be...but with the nature of the fishery as it is now, this type of information for the "weekend warrior" is invaluable. I know someone who did and it paid big dividends on a trip to trip basis over the course of just 2 months in the Vancouver area. The winter fishery in Vancouver waters is about to get moving pretty quick here. I'd expect in another week...there should be some consistent fishing. Last weekend I know that the quality was good...but you had to be "on top" of the fish to get them. There was a confirmed 11 and 14 lb out of the harbour on Saturday I think it was...for just 2 boats fishing that area....and 2 days before that there were similar sized fish hauled out of that one area by one boat. All of these fish are stuffed with large herring.

I'm ready and waiting...just need the weather to cooperate here. It's supposed to go into the crapper this weekend. Sigh.. :(

Fished in swamp water this summer with 3-4ft viz or less. After 5 mins trolling and algea on the lines i said screw this fish arent gonna see it and then bang hit a fish. trolled 5 more min and bang another and another. Yea its annoyin but i dont think it is through the water column and dont think kills the fishing much if your down deep. Also Like nog said it was on glow gear

HHHMMM charging for a report maybe us guide here should start doing that!!!!!!! we could make a mint

Ok back to the topic we used to get that too we used to call it sea snot as it built up so bad on the eyes of the rod it would accually stop you from reeling it pretty gross was worst in the thompson sound and the far upper knight inlet

For the weekend warriors in the Vancouver area, Dave's website is a must have--- most of the local tackle shop reports are a week or two behind the events as they happen on a daily basis. There are now just 6 legitimate saltwater charter operations in the Vancouver area and they service the entire market locally.

In addition, there are few other boats on the water on a given weekend so going to the "right area" at the right time is key and the local charter operators set the pace.

It's not like SW Vancouver Island where you just have to look for the boats.

Knowing when to run the distance makes the difference.

Dave charges $50.00 bucks a year and I'm sure he's breakin even after he pays expense's and such. It's interesting looking at his data back to the early 90's. I spoke to him recently and he is working on the effects of barametric pressure combined with tides, water temp. and moon phases.
