Heading to Cabo tomorrow for a week to escape the rat race . Any advice about fishing charters down there? May get a day to pop out when the wife is shopping, that's not my thing. She will be happy to get rid of me for the day as I don't much care for the shopping thing.

lucky ****! lol,

Iphone 17 001.jpgTofinofish would be the guy to ask as Big Shawn spends his winters there. I haven't seen him on the forum in some time now. I hope things are okay with him. Lots of good charters boats can be had out of Cabo or San Jose. I went with out with La Leona out of San jose and we were into a bunch of Dorado, these guys worked hard to get my son and I into fish. The only drawback was they didn't speak any English. Next time we go, I would get English speaking Captain or Deckhand. Cheers

can't really give you any advice, but just head down to the marina, and there are venders there selling trips. seemed pretty reasonable when I was down there.
we stayed at the playa grande resort and when walking into the lobby they had an easel setup with some fishing pics and advertising of a charter. boat looked fairly decent (good sized) and the price looked decent too. don't think it should be too difficult finding a trip just by going down to the marina though... maybe set it up beforehand (a day or 2) though. guys there seemed pretty friendly.

That's absolutely the worst thing you can do you'll get ripped off for sure sold a trip on an old scow-the hustlers on the docks don't work for anyone but themselves.

What you have to do is talk to the Capitan of the boat you want or use a reputable outfit like Pisces for an agent.

I know this guy from long ago-very reliable and long time Cabo operator

you could be right.
when I was down there i talked to the owner of a boat and just assumed that was the boat I would be making the deal on. he introduced me to the captain who would be running the boat, but I didn't make a deal or head out. everything seemed legit to me at the time though and I got to see firsthand the boat they said we would be going out on if I had made a deal...

I've heard nothing but good things about Dream Weaver. 3 rd generation charter captain from that area. Keeps his boat meticulously clean and catches lots of fish.

I've only been once and we went with Renegade Mike. He speaks English and is fluent in Spanish.

ABY charters. Don't deal with the hustlers running around the marina. Go into the office and make your deal the afternoon before you want to go and can probably get a fair price as they might have boats not booked for the next morning. I have had good success with them bruce

if your down at the docks when the boats come in you can see the catch and talk to the guys who just finished taking the trip to get an idea of how there trip was also. doesn't hurt to ask questions to the clients ... just a thought. when I was down there I saw sailfish coming in and guys (deckhands) cleaning them on the back of the boat. I didn't ask questions at the time but it wouldn't have hurt to have.

On the San Jose del Cabo end pangas run 150-180 and super pangas (20-22 ft, cover, toilet) run 180-240. Negotiate make a reasonable offer and it's usually accepted. Yachts are more expensive, obviously. That gets you a 6-8hr charter, usually from 6 am'ish to noon to 2pm, depending on the guide and how the fishing is. Best is to walk down to the docks and talk to the owners and view the boat and gear - make sure boat and motor are in good condition, reels are maintained, etc. Depending on how your spanish is or your ability to speak fishing with hand gestures, many captains don't speak very much english but can still be fantastic hosts and get you on fish. Not sure about the Cabo end. Another tip I've learned over the years is that gear is VERY hard to come by down there and is at least twice as expensive as up here. Many guides will happily trade charters, or at least part of a charter, for gear. In particular for good quality lever drag reels - don't bother with anything with a level wind mechanism as they hate them - marlin, wahoo and tuna can take too much line too fast for level winds.

Cheers!

X2 on ABY charters. Bruce gave me their name and I arranged a charter with owner, Senor Garcia, who is a honest gentleman. I would definitely recommend, very professional english speaking captain and Deck hand. Got us into marlin and Dorado.

on a side note.....how is retirement Bruce? sorry I missed your thing to shake yer hand :)

Found a fellow here who is a local firefighter who set us up for Friday. Will see how it turns out. Says the boat is a 31 footer with twin Cummins power and a toilet.. My bride is even coming and she hates fishing. With has been a bit cloudy this week but has produced done good catches..

Well, our fishing charter was amazing. Drove through a group of whales. Had a large shark cruise around our bait when we were slowed up in a school of bait... Hooked into 5 Mahi Mahi and landed them all.. Smallest 19 lbs, largest was a crazy wild beast of 39 lbs that just wouldn't give up.. We had so much fish at the end of the day to deal with it was crazy. Enjoyed fresh BBQ that night.
A good time for sure.
Heading home today at 4 pm. Will add some pics when we get home, poor internet server here.

Pics of Mahi Mahi

Picture of one of the fish, just about yanked my son overboard, he's a big ,fit 22 year old fisherman too! It was pretty funny. I was amazed how strong these fish were. The colors were astounding too!
The wife got the baby fish which still leaped and fought like it was on crack.
