Advice on Langara Prize

Well I am the lucky son of a @#$%& that won the 5 day trip to Langara at the JDF Derby last night (I still can't believe it - what a blast the derby was)!

I have a question. Langara offers a few time slots to go:
- Aug. 29 to Sept. 12, 2009,
- May 25 to June 12, 2010,
- Aug. 31 to Sept. 14, 2010.

I have never fished the Charlotte's so I don't know what time slot to choose. So I ask all you guys out there in the know, what time slot should I pick to catch BIG springs and some hali???

Thanks for your replies.

miss read that, i would take the last 5 days of the may 25th-june 12th the 7th-12th would be your best bet in my mind.

You won't get big Springs in either September or May, that's part of the reason they give those dates away.

For Halibut you want the flattest tides, with that in mind I'd pick the August dates this year, should be lotsa Coho too.

I've been to QCI in May twice would never go again @ that time too much uncertainty with the weather and not enough fish.

I went to QCI three years ago in the second week of June, boated 3 halibuts, 2 springs in low twenties on Queen Charlottes City Guide's charterboat outside of Rennell Sound.

there can still be fish around at the end of august (just like they can be there end of may as well).

there should be some nice coho by the end of august as well... i'd personally take that date over the early slot, but thats just me.

this year the runs seem earlier than they have been lately, so i guess you gotta wonder if they'll still be around by then... then again maybe its just going to be a really good season!?

Nice Prize
Whole H20

I have been to Langara once in the fall. It was terrible, almost skunked. I have been numerous times in July, can be decent. I have been to Englefield, (south island) in May a few times, once was fabulous, fish every twenty minutes. Other trip was decent too. My choice would be early June too, staff are fresher, they get grumpy by the end and supplies tend to run low. It is also a nice time to get away for some fishing. Weather was very good this year.

later in the season you take the chance of stormy weather.
I went up to Englefield a few years back last weekend of August
and it blew 40 knots for 3 days straight.
Of course that could happen anytime, but the later you wait the more likely to get wind.

First off Congratulations, that's quite a prize.

Either date can be great (I know that's not the answer your looking for but that's fishing). Based on the last six years in the northern Charlottes here's what I would expect based on the dates you mentioned.

JUNE
In my opinion, June has been the most consistent month for chinook fishing in the langara/northern graham island area the past five years. At this time of the year chinook average size is ~18lbs with a few mid twenties and tyees in the mix. What these fish lack in size they usually make up in numbers; when fishing is good it's not uncommon to consistently hit doubles, triples and quads. There usually are no coho around (exception this year). Chance at a fifty+ is the same as September. Halibut fishing offshore for big halis can be scratchy: the weather in June is less predictable than September.

SEPTEMBER
Weather in September is usually very good (T-shirts) which makes for enjoyable fishing. Later season however, I find fewer fish frequent the kelp beds and many guides head offshore and deeper. Generally there are fewer springs around (compared to june), but the average size is mid-twenties with a shot at a couple tyees likely, and the possibility at a fish of a lifetime realistic. Coho this time of year is usually really good and the average size is about 11 pounds. Halibut fishing in September for big halis is good.

If it were my decision I'd shoot for mid-June. Either way though, your going to have a fantastic trip, enjoy!

Take the June dates for springs.

I have fished Langara in June, July, August and September. September coho are great and you can try several methods to catch them all of which work.

One thing to keep in mind is the length of the days are shorter at the end of summer so you will have a bit less time on the water.

If it was my prize I would go in September.

Well with all the feedback I have got here and from talking to people it looks like the majority of guys are saying go for the June date for springs. So I think I will do this, though it will be hard to wait that long.

Thanks for all the advice. Tight lines!

None of thoose dates are any good, you should just give the prize to me [:o)]

Take only what you need.

i would definitely consider aug 29 2009 for a few reasons.
1. fishing is off to a great start this year and should continue, who knows what next year will bring.it can be hit and miss that time of the year. i've seen both sides of it
2. some lodges may not survive the economic turmoil this year ( i believe langara would not fail but some will)use it or u could lose it in my opinion
as far as next year i agree with the end of the may25-june12 slot
cheers ferret
ps sorry about that last NON post
