2026 Nootka Sound/Esperanza Inlet Reports

How is the road into Cougar Creek these days? The launch? What size boat are people bringing down there?

Road was ok a week ago but can get a little rough. I used to tow an 18' aluminum in and launch at Cougar Creek. Bigger boats normally launch at Gold River and run around. Its about 45 mins to Cougar Creek from Gold River

I'm afraid to ask, but any reports on fuel prices?
I haven't heard anything from Westview or Esperanza. Anybody know if they're open or fuel prices? I'm afraid I might have to sell my first born male child to fill my boat this year. :(

Westview says $2.70. Esperanza has fuel from last year so price is likely lower. Both are open. Call or email to confirm.

Fuel should drop in price with the Federal Excise Tax being suspended. But the Province of BC does not seem fond of a tax holiday on anything. Something about always being broke because of its anti mining policies... Otherwise, price of marine fuel would be very reasonable without the tax added.

We're out in April for prawns.
I'm going to have to try looking for Oysters.
However, not sure how I'm going to get to shore from the boat. :)
Actually, all you need is to wait for calm conditions and low tide, take a hammer and chisel and motor over to any of the cliff faces and you will see that they are covered in Oysters. These are very big Oysters by the way as no one ever harvests them.

We are heading up to cougar creek over the Jun 20th weekend (for 4 days).

We are spoiled and have the option of taking my 17' Arima Sea Chaser or my old mans Grady Gulfstream (both have newer power and are setup for fishing).

We have fished the area annually for 6 years now but always in august when conditions seem to be more favourable.

Wondering if the extra size is worth the extra cost and effort to get the Grady up there instead (it'll be about 3-4x times the cost due to fuel, permits, ferries etc).. Last year we cooked one of our brakes and a bearing, had to sleep on the side of the highway until the stores were open and repair it roadside. So I much prefer towing the smaller boat now :)

Are conditions typically windier in June? I assume all of the fishing is done outside of protected waters as well?

Thanks for any feedback!

Essentially no fishing is done on the inside in June. You'll be targeting everything from Beano to the Lighthouse, or on the opposite side, from Discovery to Escalante. Like everywhere on the west coast of the island, it can be very nice, but it can be very ugly too, and June would be "on average" windier than August. But it's always a toss-up. I think I'd go with the safe bet and take the Gulfstream to make sure we didn't miss out on fishing. Even running inside the sound can be ugly in a 17.

I was out early last July in my 20' CC and it was windy and rough and I wasn't digging the outside... doable, but not comfortable.

If you bring the Arima and it turns out you needed more boat you'll be kicking yourself.

If you're really adverse to the cost, maybe make it a game day decision based on weather forecast on the days leading up to your trip?

Watch windy the week before you go, make a call last minute. I do a solo trip out there in June July and watch the weather. When it looks good a few days before I plan on going.

While fishing along the beach for salmon can be pretty decent this time of year, now is the time to go offshore and hammer on white meat. Three lings per day per license. I have been offshore in a 17’ boat with 6 to 8 foot following seas and it is just not a fun place to be.
