2026 Fisheries Management " Proposals " for SOG & SVI

I’m surprised you feel that only one organization can speak for the Recreational fishers. I have consistently engaged both my MP as well as directly contacted the Minister of Fisheries., have you? You seem to think just because you find it works for you to use the SFAB/SFAC format it is for everyone, clearly it isn’t. I don’t need , or will accept this kind of lecture from you or anyone else. I personally am quite comfortable making my displeasure known through my own action. While I appreciate some people need backup and meetings, I don’t. The fact that you are constantly bleating about lack of attendance should tell you something.
How has that work for you so far?

The time to stop the infighting amongst ourselves in the public fishery sector is way overdue!. We need the SFAB/SFAC process and effective lobbying groups (like SFI, PFA, SVIAC, Drift Fishers, FRSFA, and various guide associations, etc.) that are well supported with volunteers and $$$ and LOTS of concerned individuals, businesses and chamber of commerce pressuring the current govt. to stop destroying the public fishery and the tens of thousands of jobs and billions it bring to local and provincial economy.

Time to stop infighting amongst our sector and focus on the issues and solutions in a multi-prong approach that includes lots of political pressure being applied. We will not stop them any other way!

Putin (DFO) vs Trump (sportfishing community) = getting played

Better watch out, we are going to have meetings, start a petition, and write some letters, but they are going to be really nasty letters this time.

Keep doing the same old, predictable things, but expect different results.

Good luck.

You post same things over and over, and nothing happens is that same thing? Looks like same result?

Yup, and you comment the same way every time. Dependable response, just like the tide coming in and out. Do you really think doing the same old will suddenly produce a different result?
Block a road, block a ferry, go to some overpasses with signs, surround the DFO office, have a convoy of guys towing their boats through through downtowns around the province, have a rally on the steps of the legislature, do something different and visible for christ sakes. I know some of what I suggested are maybe a step too far, but if you folks are really passionate about saving your access to the salmon resource you will need to step up your game and actually DO SOMETHING that will ruffle feathers and gain some attention. It might not work, but it just might. You won't know if you don't try.
We as commercial troller's did meetings, signed petitions, wrote letters, had conversations with MP's, and went on trips to Ottawa. We played by DFO's rules and quietly got regulated out of existence, and we are now basically a historical footnote soon to be completely gobbled up by FN. The evidence is right in front of your eyes, learn from it, or ignore it at your own peril.
OK, back to meetings, petitions and letters.

As well as any other approach has. You getting much feedback from the Minister? He attending any meetings. Are local MP’s ?I’d say we are both having the same amount of luck. Never underestimate the impact of direct contact with the politicians responsible. The problem as always is getting past the gatekeepers. Recently I received a report from the Minister from a letter I sent in February. It of course had been passed down to one of the minions to answer, but I’m not giving up, or accepting the answer I got and from who I got it. You can’t expect to ever have a major impact when you are dismissing the efforts of others, you should be encouraging more involvement and more people taking individual action, rather than dismissing it. I’m careful not to criticize your approach, you should try doing the same.

Prefect I got the answer I was looking for. Perhaps if more people did the above it would go a long way to help the many on going issues we are up against...please keep up :) Now on the the other side of the coin you and other cannot dismiss all the work the SFAB has done on the otherside. To put it this way how would everything look without the 1000s of hrs of donated time by folks that go to bat daily to represent all the good folks of the sport fishing community ? All is asked is your input so we have your direction. 😀

Won't be until a new government is in place (Conservative) that doesn't use fisheries as reconciliation tool. High up in dfo's were faced with questions from fisheries committee other day and specifically said one of their top objectives is reconciliation... before science even. So let's hope we get a CPC government soon as I know that will change and change quickly.
I watched a clip of this interview as well. DFO rep being interviewed admitted allocations of TAC are political. He also volunteered that FN considerations come first stating this is a change from the way allocations were made 20-25 years ago.

We can appreciate the tremendous efforts volunteers have in over the years, and I do. Bringing science, logic and letter writing to change this is like “bringing a knife to a gunfight” When DFO says it’s political, it’s political.

Conservative MP Aaron Gunn has been active on this. I will contact Aaron, may I suggest we all do the same.

I assume I’m the above, so as I said I’m not criticizing how anyone else is taking action or their commitment and asking for the same consideration. Not sure how I am dismissing anyone else’s work, that seems to have been an assumption made from a general comment on a result, as opposed to fact. We need to appreciate there is more than one channel to make our displeasure known to the powers to be. Each to his or her own!

You lost me, letter writing is the only means most have to contact their MP in order to get them to take up the cause. Politics is about getting elected and then reelected so letters of displeasure don’t go unnoticed. Most politicians are like weather vanes!

These days most people have internet and telephone access so that opens up a lot more means of communication than pen & paper.

Yes, certainly write letters, send e-mails, and phone and whatever else you think is useful. Paper is hardest for them to ignore, so a letter campaign is really good idea! We must do more in additional ways because we are not winning this battle. Thats my point

Also - Do contact your MP and make your opposition known, as well as your voting intentions and political contributions planned. DFO has declared it’s a political battle, so let’s fight politically. What about clubs you belong to? BCWF?

Which reminds me to contact my Hunting and Fishing club.💡

Lots of chatter and verbiage on this topic, but let's keep it in perspective;
1st priority - Salmon, and other water species, and their environment
2rd priority - SRKW - they are where they are as a result of peoples' actions. Tey deserve protection
3th priority - commercial fishermen, same consideration as others (eg mill workers, loggers) who are dependent on declining resources
4th - recreational fishing - same consideration as everyone else who likes to fish

Sorry but I should have included email. It’s a grey area, often not considered official, but official is not always needed. Here’s a little Primer for those who want to communicate. I have always followed the Premise that a letter actually requires a reply, even though email is more common, perhaps that’s why?

Hey there......i got a dumb question?
What do the SRKW eat between November and March? Or do they only eat migrating Chinook? This is sarcasm......i know they eat lingcod and halibut as well......the media only focuses on chinook/spring. Seems to me this question should be asked to people proposing closures during salmon migration. It would seem that common sense would suggest when salmon are migrating there would be plenty for both land and sea mammals......my 2-cents

Also what do they eat when they aren’t here and they weren’t here very much this Summer. Lots of Biggs but not many SRKW, maybe we should rethink the use of the term Resident.
