2025 Victoria and Oak Bay Reports

Crazy amount of sox rolled through constance this evening. Jumpers everywhere you looked. had to go deep to keep them off. really cool to see though.
Nice to see agree, be better if there was a sustainable opening to spread our seafood wealth amongst family and friends.

Perhaps a little far out for me to row.

Got to report on the bad trips too.

We got out at 630 in the fog and the tide flow was flooding fast. Way to fast and we were trolling at .8kt against the flood and over 4kt with the flood. The sonar showed fish but they were sitting on bottom and not biting. I guess getting out at 630 we missed the bite.

Ended up with one spring on for 20 sec and lots of pink and kept 2 large pinks and one clipped Coho.. Lots of pinks being pushed in on the flood, and they were jumping all over the place..

Out tomorrow with some 12 year old kids. They will have a great time with pink action and hopefully they get hooked on fishing.

Got a late start today because work got kiboshed. 😜

I knew it was going to be a lucky day since I showed up and 8, and the parking lot was full……except for the 1 fisherman who was already on his way back in and he was taking out his boat. Started fishing at about 8:15, and in 15 minutes I’d landed a 71cm marble, that weighed in at just under 11lbs out at Macaulay in about 100’ of water, on a spoon. Made my way out to Brochie and within a short time, I doubled up with pinks, landed 1, long line release on the other. Fish were jumping everywhere, landed a few more, but I was waiting for the bigger one, which never stayed on the hook. I had several larger ones today, but they just were kicking and screaming and never made it into the boat.
Off the water about 11:30.

We had a pretty crazy couple hours yesterday in the fog and rain off Victoria. We tried trolling for a few hours and hooked and released a nice over size spring around 23-25 lbs. The boys were getting bored so we decided to try jigging for springs.

Within 90 minutes, we jigged up 3 Hali on Baitcaster reels and steel head rods. I’ve jigged up the odd Hali before but never 3 in less than 2 hours.

My son jigged and released a 84 cm and we kept a 77 cm chinook.

Got out this morning with 3 kids and their dad at 720. I didn't have any pink gear rigged so I put down our left over XL bait while I rig up. Bag got a double header of springs, dropped the gear again more spring action. It was nuts for just over an hour and the sonar was loaded with big fish then it went dead. The kids needed their dad's support to hold the rod and not get knuckle busted but did a good job over all.
Thank god we have a long handle net.

The bite was 815 to 930 and we landed 4 springs (79,78,78,76) and lost three near the boat. Only ended up with one pink. All were caught on XL bait and 82 ft on the DR.

Today sure made up for yesterday's 00 springs.

Wind was threatening but glad we went anyways. Scored the last parking spot at Flemming at about 6:15. Lots of boats just out front but headed over toward Brotchie to get away. Lots of pinks jumping.
Put our spoons down to 60 and 75. Bite there started about 0730. Killed the first spring of 75 cm (white) released a couple ~70 and then kept a similiar bleeder.
Seas went calm just after 8 so we headed out to the bank. Trolled for a while but it seemed kind of slow for springs. Bottom fished but just caught a ton of small rock fish, lings etc. Trolled pink gear for another bit hoping for sox but just got humpies. Released another nice chinook before coming in.

I like that they are all within 3cm of each other but one dwarfs the other 3.

Thanks for the reports. Glad to see you got some good action!

The 4 are just about the same size and the dwarf one is a pink. That is the only pink we got all day.

I like the new license system where you have to mark down the size of your springs. The people yesterday all had electronic licenses and they could mark down what they caught on them.

The surprising thing is we still have yet to land a clipped spring this year. Last year, I submitted 12 heads.

I will give myself and the fishing a break today and go to the Langford car show

After a disappointing Friday in Sooke we decided to change venues and head to @Doug 's stomping grounds. It ended up being a great decision as we ended up with a 60, 72, 75, 80 Chinooks, and 7 Pinks. Three of the Chinook were white. The 80cm was caught by my daughter (her biggest fish ever) and weighed 17lbs on our Amazon scale.

Watched a busy Flemming boat launch on the webcam while I ate my breakfast at home. Nutters.

We were on the water around 0700. Busy out front. Headed over to Brotchie. A couple of light hits on anchovies. Switched to spoons. A light hit, kind of pinkish feeling, turned heavy. Darn fish would not fight or run. Got it to within 20' of the boat where it sulked. Big fish that eventually rolled the hook the right way, for him.
Continued on and got at 72 and a 75. All between 7:30 and 8:15.

When looking for sox. None of them but lucked out with a couple of hatchery coho. At our cut-off at 10:00, 25' of the DR. pink spoon, gear gets pounded. Heavy long run. Fouled humpy? Nope! Another chunky Spring to end the morning.

Some big fish at the dock. Good reports all along the waterfront and oak bay.

Crazy busy at 9:30 when I rowed out. Clear of the crowd I got a well deserved honk from the only boat within 200 meters.
Watched a lot of fish being caught. Missed a couple hits at the green can.
The tide line was full of kelp, which I did catch, only to watch the boat beside me tie into what looked like a nice spring (top right).
By 12:30 most boats moved out.
