2025 Victoria and Oak Bay Reports

You joined freedom boat club? Did you sell your boat?
I "should", I helped connect a BC guy with a WA buyer and he is getting stupid money for his boat. This was my buddy's membership, he has taken me out on the 22-foot Alexis and 22 Defiance, not dialled in the way I like, but they are fishy! Take the money from selling my boat, 50% pay debt down and invest 50%. With the cost of moorage for most and the cost of maintaining and buying a 22 or more boat, the fees are reasonable. I'm waiting for one more part from the dealer I bought my engine from I didn't know about the secondary battery cable needed for Suzuki's owner did but his parts/sales guy didn't. Only problem with Freedom is they might be a little pissed when I take it to Bamfield next weekend and don't come back for an extra 3-4 days...and then to Tofino....then Comox....then the inside passage. I've got a video coming on boat clubs coming up.

I see many boats are anchored up and a couple are drifting by the bank, how’s everyone doing?

Saturday slow off Oak Bay. Some doggies and undersize lings for the short lull in the tide out to and in the purple zone. Crabbing was amazingly poor as well?

Sunday, out to Constance after Rayvon's report. Kind of unfamiliar with the area and arrived way to early as the tide was still blasting. Back trolled for a while, losing my Dollar Mart musky lure. A Ling killer no doubt had it been given a chance.

Tide finally slowed down and we were joined by a few charter boats. Jigged for a couple of hours and enjoyed some fantastic fishing, releasing a couple of chunky clipped chinooks, my daughters largest, pushing 20#. Lost half dozen or so more, plus three good sized flounder and a bunch of other bottom fish. She counted 15 fish to the boat for herself.

The other boats headed in so we did one last drop on what is probably the shallowest spot out there and boom! Ended up with a thick 102cm, measure thrice hali. 31lbs on my cheapo scale. Big enough for her light spinning rod.

Bulk, cheapo Gibbs minnows were the lure of the day, out fishing my more refined and expensive Darts, among others. 3:1.

Hey guys,

Heading to Pedder Bay for the first time this July. I usually fish near Port Hardy. Are there any spot prawns in the area? Should I even bring my prawn trap?

Thanks

Yes, there are prawns. Most people who try use a ton of weight and still loose traps. I would not recommend it as it is less productive then hardy as well.

Can anyone suggest the lowest tide you can launch and retrieve a 24' aluminum at esquimalt anglers ramp without having to dip the truck tires in the saltwater? Im hoping its 2.5 to 3'. Thanks

Ya right around 3’..I have a 24 with a pretty deep v. anything less than 3.5 and it’s tough to get off the trailer, retrieve is ok if you don’t mind

I have a 24’ welded on bunks. Less than 3.5’ gets tight. 3’ probably get off the trailer, 2.5’ probably not.

All depends on your trailer and truck. I have a 6.5 foot box and launching my 25.5 I try not to do it under 5 feet and I get the bottom of my tire wet there most times I retrieve. I sometimes bring and extension just in case.

Woke up early with no pals to fish with so I hit the water solo just before 6am. Was a little rougher than I like but dropped a trap and put a rod out. Sent down my Peetz Vp special and by 615 it was on. I noticed the bait and fish were off the bottom, I was in 120ft and 78 on the rigger. This was my first over 20 lbs this year and it made my day. One other hit was a small 5 lb. Was bouncing around pretty good so packed er up at 9am. Trap had lots of just unders ,1 female and a big softy.
