I tried anchoring up for halibut this morning. Nice calm conditions but only got 3 dogfish. Tried a couple new spots for cod but was only able to get hung up and lose gear. Then moved to a previously good spot and got a 70cm and a 19lb.
The prawn traps had a good amount of large size too.

We also caught Cabezon too. I’ve never caught one of those before.

Was out today, put the crab traps down at the spit and saw a local boat there which gave me some doubt as to where I was going. Ignored my thought to change plans and went over to Coal. We landed a 17 pounder in the first 20 minutes and a 9lb shortly later. Released a couple because it was still early and the one was just over the minimum...thought we could get a bigger one to top out. Guests lost 3 or 4 then the bite ended by 10am..started at 8am. 5 or 6 boats there and a few more caught.

Tried coal again with rhe family this evening. Beauty night! Calm and sunny.
Very few boats out, but I saw a fish netted and heard of another.
None for me as usual. At least no massive tangles like I had yesterday. Still haven’t had a decent fish on in pushing 50 hours of fishing in multiple parts of the south island now too.
Sigh. One day.

Fished Sidney today 7:30-2.
Started at the spit jigging. Fished shallow water just inside the tide rip chasing bait balls and my son landed about a 10 lb hatch. Then moved over to coal and trolled for an hour with a few others. Lots of bait but no one catching so back to the spit. Trolling this time. Gaff released a wild close to 20lb. Then had a smaller one side of boat that got off while looking for a fin.
Left there at 11:30 and went looking for lings. Released a couple unders and kept 2 around 10lb.
Sidney is always a fun adventure.

Fished Sidney yesterday for the derby. Nice calm water and lots of boats. Sidney is so different than Sooke. Sooke everyone is trolling the circuit and lots of big boats. Sidney lots of boats were jigging and trollers worked around them. Lots of smaller and many open boats.
We went straight to the spit and found flat water, no tide rips, no boats and no birds. Did a bit of a scout with the sounder and found no bait so moved to powder warf. There were around 10 boats there ahead of us. We joined in and started jigging. We hooked 1 fish under 10lb right away and saw others catching. Bite was on. We jigged for a bit then switched to trolling.
We landed a 13.6lb hatchery and another under 10lb released. When the bite went off we moved back to Sidney spit to find only 1 other boat there. Current had picked up and it looked much more fishy so we dropped the trolling gear. We landed 7 more fish. 1 wild around 20lb. The rest under 10 lb mix of wild and clipped.
So no derby winner for us but a very productive day and a ton of fun. We donated our fish at the weigh in so no cleaning to do.

Took my parents out for afternoon slack. Mom seems to be the good luck as we got 2 hits right away at the spit. She landed the first which was unclipped borderline size. The second seemed to instantly run across the other line and tangle city ensued.
Then we tried coal and currents were nasty.
Dropped them off after a couple of hours and took the wife for a sunny float. It’s was lovely just floating listening to country.
Took her for a trip to some ling spots and had a few nice drops with little to no current and felt the rock all the way down but no takers.
Little green spoon got both hits.

I'm curious for jigging salmon what are peoples favorite lures out in Sidney? I have been using a 2.5 oz 4" needle fish with a green, yellow, silver coloring but wondering if there is something better for salmon out here.
I have also thought of switching to find a black and silver color or blue and silver since I seem to always catch black and silver needle fish in the area accidentally when jigging.

Did you make it out? any luck? I'll jig for salmon occasionally but not enough to figure out a favorite lure or a most productive lure.

If you decided to sleep In this morning bad move lol. Sidney was on fire today 15 for 18 on Chinook, multiple double headers done by 9:45am. Epic morning.

Hey Scott, Mixture for sure. a few high teenagers, lost two nicer ones for sure. Most were hatchery. Only 3 wilds. Most between 8-12lbs.
Launched from Mill Bay today hoping for a load of prawns and a jig up retainable Chinook in 19-7. Prawning was poor but did luck out on a 95cm ling and a limit of crabs. With the wind it was to difficult to keep a jig vertical so switched to mooching a herring with 6oz near the bottom. Actually had two big fish on that let go half way up before finally pinning the third. Added a new waypoint on my plotter.
Saw one decent spring caught.

We went out too late 10am. Kids stayed up late and my wife didn't want me to wake them. The wind was wild and big waves but my father in law was visiting so the boys and I stuck it out. 2nd drop I got a great 25lb ling but was a bit wild pulling it in with the large waves hitting the back of the boat as my son drove while I was reeling. Good times!
We tried to troll along the protected area of hamley point but no luck on salmon. We saw a bunch off salmon and bait on the depth sounder but didn't land any.
I think coal was way more protected. Where were you guys?
We got a bunch of crab yesterday and left the traps out to check tomorrow.
