2025 Sidney Reports

Warning! Fishing alongside the Spit over the last week, we've lost all terminal tackle on 2 underwater hazards. In both cases, the downrigger was down 40 feet, in 80-90 feet of water. Whatever we hooked was basically immovable with a rod and reel, no matter how hard we tried to change angle, etc. For some reason the downrigger didn't react at all and the gear on the other side of the boat down at 69 feet also missed them.

Interesting. That area to the north was where I was yesterday.

I saw one crab trap that was barely above water. Was it during a high tide?

Seems like a lot of crab traps in there.

We snagged each of the traps on a different day, but both were within an hour or so of the low tide, at about 3-4 feet. As we were trying to get free of the south hazard yesterday, my wife said she could see something white, several feet under the surface, where the line from her rod was pointing.

No fish tonight. Very little bait at either lighthouse or powder wharf.

Interesting skyline with the smoke, hope they get the fire under control at China Creek.

Not sure if the guys who came to powder wharf are on here but a cool shot when we both called it.

Apparently the big waves and wind was good for salmon this afternoon. On our way out a few waves flew into the front window. I wondered how well fishing will be but we hooked up withing minutes on our first spring then lost another nice sized one at the boat. Tried to transfer to my son to net it but went slack for a second and off it went.

We got 3 more undersized. The big ones seemed to bite when no one was around. 3 other boats showed up after it calmed down but the bite was not as good.

Great time out, the boys got to reel in the smaller ones.

Always the same needle fish in they bellies

We caught everything on green flashers and lures. I always thought these would work but still haven't caught anything with them. They look just like the needle fish.

Thanks for the reports!

Where were ya? Going to try on the morning

Fished Hamley today from 630-130. Maybe the rain has helped fish move in? 4 people onboard, 4 Chinook , 5 pinks. Released a few chinooks trying to find coho. All in, there was 6 Chinook , 3 wild coho and 7 pinks. Great day fishing. Fishing mostly 50-75ft in 80-130ft of water. Majority on bait , few on small spoons

Sounds like a good day!

For pinks do you guys just leave one rod high in the water column? We were thinking of trying hamley tomorrow.

We were in 80 to 65 feet at the spit. We're only using spoons though. I don't know how to setup anchovies yet ;)

Spoons will work fine I'm sure. Just keep changing your colors and depths until you find them. Everything seemed to be running in schools yesterday. I'd fish 45-85ft for downrigger depths for everything right now.

I was out at first light this morning. Tried the spit with some heavy currents. Managed to get a hit on the center rod up high with a 6oz slip weight and a naked AP herring spoon. Didn’t stick but those hits are super fun.

Then I went to Hamley. Bait city over there!
Didn’t see much action except for one skilled dude looks like he managed to bonk a couple. Packed in in by 10.

So what exactly did that guide over there teach you?

Long time lurker here - first time posting. Picked up some great info over the years - thanks all! Fished yesterday during the high tide around 3:30 on the east side of Moresby, in one of the few places in 18-4 that are still open. Landed a pink and a slot sized chinook in about 45 minutes of solo fishing. My first chinook in 5+ years. Pink hootchie at about 50’ on the rigger for both.

Fished the afternoon tide at Hamley, had 2 slot size Springs within an hour and then nothing, just died off. Lots of fish and bait on the screen. Both fish liked Herring Aid skinny G with green flasher between 80-100 ft in 120-140 ft of water.

I think I hit on that south on spot today.

Looked liked we hit something but just a slight bounce on the downrigger and rod. Then everything was gone. About 80 to 70 feet of water and downrigger at 55 feet.

Bet ney to the new gear on the one side.

I'm the bright side we got our first double header within the first 15m. Super waving again. Not really sure what to do with a 7 and 4 year old. The 7 year old couldn't pull the rod out of the holder so we just kept it in gear and I pulled up the first then 2nd. One nice chinook 28 inches and the 2nd was just big enough to keep. We kept trolling for a while and got another small one and released it

Some crazy pools of bait.

Lost our gear around that south spot then went back hit 2 more small ones then finally we got a really nice one. Just under the limit and you could see lots on the finder. I think that would have been fun with 2 rods down but we limited out and went home to bbq.

Any chance you can mark up a screenshot of the general area, appreciate it, cheers.

There was one, they double posted, the first post has the image and area on it and it looks like the same area I had a issue with.

I have been around that north area a lot as well. I think I'm just going to save my track that worked and make sure I dont go back into the section that I got caught up on. I have the track as well but its on my boat gps so not as easy to access as the phone.
