2025 Nanaimo Reports

I have removed the conversations pertaining to C&R practices, as this is a fishing reports thread. There is plenty of discussion on this topic, including updated information from recent studies, in the Conservation/Fisheries Management section of the forum. We try to keep the reports threads on topic, as members come looking for that specific information now and in the archives from previous years. While the topics that veer off into other discussions are valid and important, we ask that you take them to the appropriate area of the forum.

Thanks.

Got the lines in the water off the flat tops just after three yesterday and only lasted one tack. Wind started out around 11-12 mph and quickly got to the no fun any more level.
That was just enough time to get this nice 76 cm spring that looks like it had a recent narrow escape. If you zoom in you can see what looks like claw marks and a partially shredded gill plate. She also had a large gash across her underside right below the pectoral fins that you can just see the edge of in the pic. This gash was over 4 inches long and an inch wide and starting to heal over. Pretty resilient salmon but she admittedly didn’t have a lot of fight in her. IMG_8637.jpeg

Beautiful calm evening tonight finally so ran out to Fingers for a fish. Managed one mid slot fatty and a few unders. Caught it at 170ft on an army truck Jughead nano. There were a ton of boats out and a few fish, mainly coho's from what I could see being landed. I didn't see much bait on the sounder at all and the fish we landed had an empty stomach.

I was distressed to see the utter disregard for living creatures with a boat releasing coho by flinging them 10 and 20 feet in the air to slap down on the water. I also saw some bad net jobs and fish that may swim away but they sure as hell aren't going to survive very long. It is really disheartening to see the disrespect some people have for these creatures that are giving their lives to sustain us.

Hope you guys enjoyed the calmer water last night…I was over for work and had just the one evening window but alas those winds sent me to the Crow & Gate instead…good luck to all out there in area 17 have a great summer! And…keep em wet!!! (FFS!)

Went out today for 6:30 to thrasher and it was still pretty bumpy. Just us and one other boat out there. We were able to make two passes and didn’t get a nibble so decided it was too rough to stick around……will keep trying.
