2025 Nanaimo Reports

Found what I believe is a PIT tag in the belly of a coho I caught just as I was about to throw in the BBQ. WHere do I send this?1000035267.jpg1000035269.jpg

To report a PIT (Passive Integrated Transponder) tag found on a fish in Nanaimo, you should contact the local Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) office or mail the tag and catch information to Erik Grundmann at the Pacific Biological Station. Specifically, the address is: Erik Grundmann, Pacific Biological Station, 3190 Hammond Bay Road, Nanaimo, B.C. V9T 6N7

Anyone fishing off Nanaimo the last couple of days? Heading out tomorrow and will put in a report regardless.

Bit slower today compared to the weekend and last week. The schools of coho are moving but if you can find them its on. Small spoons or hootchies are working in 100-50'.

what about this kind of lure which was a gift to me from my sister:

All barbs have been pinched off. The thing is, even if it is legal I'm reluctant to use it as quick releases are tougher to do with treble hooks.
Single hook off the tail should work.

Great assessment. Less fish around and they seem to be bunching up. If you get lucky and find a school it’s still productive

Buddy and I kept 4 hatchery out of the 12 we boated, lost another 8 or 10 and released a spring around 12lbs or so. Got them all on 109 hoochies 100 and 140ft deep. Fish in all directions outside the fingers. Saw lots of fish caught be others as well. Boat ramp was very busy!!

Had a quick shift late morning. 3 to the boat, 2 small springs and one coho that would have been perfect grade for BBQ but had to toss it back. Saw some nets out for sure. Also saw 2 dead floating salmon about 5lbs. Did notice a handful of boats netting small fish... just reefing them in and netting without a care for ID'ing the fish first. Maybe I am old-school but no net unless positive ID.

Went out at dawn with my son today in front of Shack rock in my Inflatable.
Got a couple of double headers right off the start.
We ended the morning with 3 nice hatcheries in the bag. The Coho were all chasing bait around 40ft. If you saw salmon lower and drop to them it was Chinook. Which we also fought with but released. About a 50/50 for hatcheries to wild mix i found.
