Are the pinks in the river yet? Or any from the pier? Or any other spot with easy access for a 6 year old? Was out there with the grandkids last week but no sign yet. The kiddos get sea sick, so their mum only lets them fish when they are with me on shore.
Yes, seiners, gill netters and trollers all get a crack at the sockeye. It will be a travesty if we don’t get an opportunity- for the past 2 days the Area 12 test boat has caught over 25000 in only 5 sets both days.
In his 50-plus years of fishing the Salish Sea, Paul Kershaw has never seen a Fraser River summer sockeye salmon run so large, maybe up to 13 million, and not being able to do anything about it.
Any colour flashers but stack three dummies. Then stack three lines above that. 18" leader. The three tricks are to keep them with you once they're following, so always leave gear in the water. Go as slow as humanly possible. And last, turn lots. And then hang on. A slide helps get them in the door and into the bucket. Don't play with them long.
They tend to eat zooplankton (I.e. small and drifting feed). So trolling faster with herring or needlefish lures not typically used or successful. Small pink, bubblegum, skirts with shorter leaders and slow troll. Or some folks just troll plain black hooks even. I.e. less is more behind the flasher for sockeye. They can be funny. Early morning sunrise when sun first hits the water bite can be lights out usually and then can just go quiet… taunting you and jumping all around…you just never know. Depends on how they are schooling (commercial seiners upstream of you tend to really split up the schools and slow the fishing). Been 10 years since I fished the Fraser sockeye run, so who knows, might all be different this time, and opposite to what I outlined.
i remember when i first fished sockeye i was scared to get into the pack of boats so i just skirted the outside and caught nothing. absolutely nothing. next day i said “screw it “ and was in the pack and loaded the boat. they like flash as mentioned . you have to stay on them. it’s good to have a dedicated driver and two guys to man the rods. screw nets. pull them in by the flasher and set back down. this is a meat fishery thru and thru. not my favorite fiahery but sox are a delight.
