2025 Campbell River Reports

Heading into Shoal Bay on East Thurlow with some friends at the start of September.

Wondering if they’ll be any opportunities for Springs or Coho nearby (have an boat).

Any info would be much appreciated and happy to report back!

your going to be minutes from two of the best salmon spots going. Hall Point and Davis Point ( Thurston Bay) can be epic. i prefer to fish both on the ebb tide. also Denham Bay along the beaches, greensea bay and Chatham Point. some of the biggest northern coho of the year terrorize those spots and Sept 1 i believe you can retain a wild up there. check your regs

I really appreciate the info. Thanks very much. Excited for our trip!

What’s been happenning last couple of days? Pinks still around in numbers? Much coho action at Francisco? Looking for some action for grandson later today. Any info appreciated!

We Sabiki jigged up some herring this morning on the shoal and cut plugged them and hammered coho in shallow in the middle of the shoal. Some real hog wild ones too. Also a nice sprinkling of chinooks mixed in

We had a similar morning on the flats. SO much bait and birds, and boats. Was very happy to see conditions were the same as Sat/Sun after getting a few reports, and only being able to get out today. Got a bucktail coho, and a coho/spring on a 5" 602. So scrappy in 50' or less water.

Got cut off rather rudely a few times by other bigger boats, but I guess we have it pretty ok, not usually a crazy big pack.

Yeah there were a few times I ran out my herring and a coho came and smashed it right in the surface as I was trying to put my line in the clip, leaving me wondering if I just pull it in by hand or let it go slack and reel it 15 feet to the boat.

The biggest problem big boats have is the rear facing pilot controls, some really aren’t watching ahead. Many do and are courteous.

You probably saw us out there! Maroon topped arima sc 17. Not too bad for the chaos of Labour Day!

Well i had an interesting day. launched the boat at 3:00 pm and jigged the lighthouse for about five minutes with my Westcoast Tackle Slow Pitch Rod when something big took it down. poor little rod was buckled over almost in half. An hour later after several poor attempts i pulled my favorite 150 gram jig out of an approx 60-70lb halibut. my biggest by far on ECVI. shame to let it swim but that’s the law.

then i went to Wilby after and lost the stupid jig on a five pound coho! still managed a couple nice coho and a 70 cm spring.

Caught a couple of yellowtail rockfish deep off the hump yesterday. Only second time I have encountered these in the SoG. Last time was off cape lazo a couple years ago (clearly a huge school because one after another). Anyone else seeing these?

I’ve caught them at shelter point, and sutil point, usually when I am 200+ on the sounder and bumping bottom with the gear. Also saw one jigged up a couple weeks ago in dogfish bay. They’re out there for sure

We caught 4 or 5 yellowtail on Sunday at about 200', one of which was pretty big and also a nice mid slot spring. When i came up to about 170-180' I stopped getting them.

Pulled up 3 or 4 of them this year in 200+ feet of water south of frisco point, trolling hoochies. 3 to 4 pounders - yum!
