2024 Port Renfrew Reports

Spent two days in "Renfrew and I can see why I am first to post. It's quiet...too quiet. Seriously, I had the marina to myself. Weather wasn't great but the crabbing was. Also, fought the snotty seas and headed east this morning because it was far worse to the west. It payed off as we picked up our two halibut in less than an hour. Once again Fairway pinks were the ticket.

How close to shore were you?

Ok I gotta ask. Fairway pinks? as in pink salmon you bought at fairway market? Also did you get the hali on the drift? Sad to hear renfrew is so slow/empty

Pink salmon I got at Fairways. I should have frozen a bunch last summer when they were jumping in the boat. Was out again a couple of weeks ago to the west on anchor and got a 40 on mackerel.

Anyone been out lately? Leaving in the morning for our annual trek to our place for the summer. I pulled the boat out a few weeks ago when I was there building a shed with my dad and ran out of time so it's still in the driveway. I need to change the leg oil and touch up the bottom paint then splash it for the summer.
I know the guides are working most days but with the long run to NitNat right now I know the sporties are a lot less for now. We are out for a long stretch, so I'll try and post up a few reports.
Can't wait to get back on the water......see you out there!

Just finished 4 days of fishing with my son. We got fish every day, but on the last day we heard at the dock that fishing was a bit slow.

There are fish along the beach but been a bit slower the last few days. Salmon on the bank are decent size but slower out there as well compared to past years. Halibut numbers still seem good on both sides of the closure. DFO has had 2 boats out here since the 14th doing their thing…..just an fyi. And crabbing is slow but if you put a bit of time in you will get them…..

Fished Saturday and Sunday. Big ebb in the am made for slow fishing on the beach. Not much bait around. Foggy all day Saturday and parts of Sunday. Weather was good Saturday, not so good Sunday. Saturday released a nice fish in the 20's and kept a white in mid teens. Sunday kept a red in mid teens and that was it. With the slower reports and fog I ran further up to avoid boats. Fished Logan to Walbran. We did very well on ground fish though.
Reports from the guides were the bank was slow Saturday but better on Sunday. Beach was good Saturday afternoon at top of flood but that was late afternoon and wind had picked up.

Heading back to work for a week tomorrow then back out for a bit before my fishing is over for the summer. Fishing along the beach is pretty consistent right now it seems. We ran out and anchored up yesterday and got our Halibut quick. Nothing big but good eaters. Crabbing has really slowed and I saw a commercial boat out there last night mopping up what was left for the summer. DFO was patrolling everyday since the 14th but they haven’t been out the last few days. Good luck out there….

Was out on Saturday (late start) and Sunday. Fished from Rock Pile to Camper. Two good hits and one to the boat. Turned out to be 90 cm. 47' on the rigger with anchovy and white cuddlefish. Then off to East Point for a couple of hours in the afternoon. Nothing. One legal crab for our efforts. Some wind.

Sunday started bright and early at Owen Point. Lots of bait and fish on the sounder. One to the boat, oversize, on anchovy. Moved to Camper. A bite turned on around 9:45 just west of the creek mouth. Kept one, quite literally 80 cm on the nose. Then finished the day at 10:30 with a double header. One over and one under. 47' anchovy and 30' blu/green/whi with silver hootchie.

Weather was awesome. No wind, no rain, no sun.

Was out on the weekend fished camper Saturday and Sunday. Saturday was the more productive of the two days with my friend and I limiting out by 10 with a 74cm and 80cm on the dot and bright chrome. Both fish were caught on spoons in 54’ of water trolled around 30-36’, after our limit we switched to jigging and managed a few lings and released all. Sunday was a different story like a lot of boats we talked to the report was slow, we managed 3 coho to the boat and all released and one oversized spring at 87cm. Fished camper from 5:30am- 1:30 then switched to the merry go round at east point till 3 and nothing. All in all a good guys trip and can’t wait to go back end of August when we finally have no slot size.

Looking at the regs for Coho for Renfrew, nothing outside a line from Owen Pt to the light at East Pt.
DFO has determined that their whales now do eat coho.

A little late but hauled over to renfrew from Duncan on Thursday, fished from around 3 till dark and didn’t get anything, Quite a few boats out tacking around camper and didn’t see much action, seen lots of fish in the finder but no bait. lots of whales though. Did jig up a big cabazon, had no idea they eat crab
