Had an epic week in Bamfield and Barkley Sound taking family members fishing and sight seeing. The fishing was on fire for us almost every day with Cree, Meares, the Wall, and Kirby giving the most love. 30-60 on the riggers running everything from spoons to bait with the best luck coming from herring aid or gold Skinny G. In addition to a solid roster of Chinook, coho and pinks we brought in a few high teens, a 20, 24, 25, and a 29 which made the front page image of the Vancouver Island fishing Facebook group. The 29 was a monster fish and pulled around 200 yards of line before spending 15 minutes coming to the boat. It got caught around kelp right at the end and it was tense times getting it into the net which made it all the more awesome when we pulled it in. It was my sister in law’s second salmon (the first being an 18 a few days before) and it was a team effort with lots of coaching and encouragement. I went father and son fishing off Kirby on the last day and he reeled in an 18 in amongst heavy traffic and rocks. Big thanks to all those who changed their tack as we fought it near and far and under the boat before netting it. He is still young and was grinning from ear to ear as the guys in adjacent boats cheered him on. After you get fish in your freezer it is those memories that are the real catch.
