2012 TUNA trips

I mont a plastic garbage can on my pod half filld with slush. Put them in head 1st with a slit thoat and bleed them out. Place them in ice after 15 mins and they are sushi grade eaters

haha had the same idea if you look back in the 2011 tuna thread....my thought was to have a rope running from the stern cleat to a forward bow cleat. Every 10" or so I thought of rigging a large carrabeaner onto a short length (6" or less) of rope, which then is fixed to the stern to bow rope....catch a tooner, stab em good, and clip the carrabeaner at the base of the tail. The tail is strong enough to not slip out I'd reckon, and then you would just have a meat rack of 8 or so bleeding tuna hanging off the side of your rig. Once they have bled out unclip em and toss them in the ice chest.

I may have been roasted a little with the idea, but I still think it would make a good system. As well as the removable ice chests built to the same size and shape the deck....10" tall and strong enough to stand on. Basically building a second floor under which you can store a shat load of Toons and ice.

But all in all I think Tuna Don has the best method, using aerated bait tanks with constant pumping water until they bleed out.

BANG BANG

Hey FB, are you going to get out this year? Tuna Shootout?

I like the carabiner idea could even clip them off the downriggers. Pretty optimistic that you would have 8 tuna all bleeding at once but that would be a sight to behold.

Both times I have been out, we have bled the Tuna in an ice slush but my concern is that even if they are upside down, if they are immersed in water the hydrostatic pressure of the water would stop them from bleeding once their heart stops pumping. To get a proper gravity drain, they would have to hang in air. I also like Birdsnest's idea of cutting the tail to get a real good drain.

Off to Mountain Equipment Co-op, what size carabiner do you think would be required?

bleed them into a bucket or over a scupper hole in the deck.........gut the tuna out then slush ice cool them. Then pack them on ice, done deal....

So you are gutting them on board. Do you ever cut the heads off Mike? I read that really cools them down fast.

I know people cut the heads off sometimes for space saving but I'd be concerned about that in a slush/slurry. Cutting the heads off exposes the ends of loins to whatever bacteria is present in the cooling tank/bleed buckets. It seems to me that it would be safer to take them off after the fish is well cooled and when the fish is just about to go onto clean ice.

as a deckhand at this time, all I can do is harp, *****, whine and beg to make sure I'm out there...both mine and the captains schedule has been very busy but I'm hoping things come together and we will be right in tow with the rest of the boys heading out for what should be an epic event...weather permitting lol.

holding my breath as the days grow near....

Bleed Bo

I've been following the thread as well... Sadly, I may not have a report (YET!!!) or know how to catch Tuna, but I DO know how to make things - lol
Here is my 'Home Depot especial' Bleed box. Fittings are from the irrigation section, 4 rubber feet and 5 mins with a step drill - viola! I ran a garden hose wye from the raw water wash pump to circ the water. Tested it on Salmon and hali out at Swiftsure - worked well enough that the fish box in the boat floor didn't need it's normal soap scrub out.

Using Attractors

I am seeking advice.. please feel free to comment.
I ran a few 'test' trolls the last time I had my boat out. I decided for my set-up that I would need to move a rod outboard OR the handline off the cleat outboard. I had my old downrigger bases from the pre 60" telescopic days and I wonder if anyone thinks you could use the pulley and retriever rope clutch to run a handline? ( missing from pic is the snubber )
OR - use the retrieve line to hang a cannonball 4' down and use a dummy flasher as an attractor? Nothing else attached to the flasher so easy to pull in to clear. AND - opinions on using either a Kone Zone flasher? or a conventional 11" hotspot? (only one or other - pic was just concept )
When I can't go fishing - I experiment with gear for therapy

Interesting idea. I'm wondering if I couldn't just use the braid on the downrigger as the meat line. E.g. take the ball off and leave the rubber snubber on. Attach a 8-10' 100lb mono leader on and attach a tuna clone or X-rap to that. Then use the down rigger to retrieve the fish until it's close and hand line in the last 8-10'.

I'm not sure about the US rules, but using the rigger as a fish retriever is not permitted in Canada. ( that's why I'm using just the old arms w no motor )But you could use the existing arm n pulley without attaching to the drum. I don't know how the rope clutch would stand up after a few fish, but I pulled pretty hard in my test without it slipping

First tuna run october 1st an 2nd

Going out weather permittiing looking for a few boats to go with n maybe some gear selection and color tips. Bamfeild or ukee departure depending on who wants to go.

It would be legal in the U.S. (where it's even legal to use an electric reel for hali). I like your idea as the rigger is then effectively a 60" outrigger.

Looks like the weather may give us a window Thursday, maybe Friday too?
I'm going to pack for a trip to La Push Wash. for a try - Seadna - I have sent you a PM
