2004 F225 Exhaust Corrosion

Lots of talk about older Yamaha F225 motors having exhaust corrosion issues so I thought I would share a few pictures for anyone looking to buy or has one that hasn't been updated.

It’s a 2004 with roughly 600 hours on it. I bought it a few years ago from a dealer that had no records of the boat and I never got to talked to the previous owner. So I really have no idea what it’s life has been like but I knew the risk I was taking.

I had no symptoms of corrosion but with the price and how hard it is to find a used motor I wanted to play it safe so I took it apart. Glad I did, it wasn’t if but when was it going to fail.

It’s been a fairly easy job so far. Not one broken or severely seized bolt, surprising for a 18 year old saltwater motor. I am about 3 hours into it and about an hour of that was rigging up a way to lift the power head off.

Parts are on back order and I won’t see them till mid April so I have a bit of time to clean everything up and ready for reassembly.

Curious to know what the parts cost was, I have a friend with one that is untouched with 750 hrs on it and he was just going to run it till it goes and then buy a new one.

That was kind of my plan but I have a few bigger trips this summer I want to do and didn’t want to be scrambling for a motor or worse have it happen on the trip.

Parts are $1500 plus tax. You buy one kit that comes with all new insides pieces. I am going to do water pump and of course all the fluids as well expecting to be under 2K when back up running.

GOOD LUCK on finding a new one ones that are apparently "coming" are spoken for, why wouldnt you just get it fixed? and your back going good for many years again??
cause ill tell you now if you wait till its dies its gonna happen in the worst times ever or worse when its really ****** weather and someone may get hurt.

I did the exhaust kit on my 2003 F225 in 2015 approx with 500 hours on it. Think I spent $3K installed. It still blew up in 2019 with 750 hours on it. It had some corrosion when I did it but that corrosion problem gets everywhere. Mine went at the thermostat on the block. Just rusted right thru and I had a stream of water running out of the side of the block...off shore at Nootka 20 miles from Critter Cove. Thank God for a good kicker......which blew up the following year. Now I have 2 new motors.

Oh I have been trying to talk him into fixing it but he doesn’t want to spend much on it and would rather replace it. Nootka trips he is usually not far from me so I guess I may be the one who gets to tow him lol. Money isn’t an issue as much as new one’s availability is. I will broach the subject again, only ****** thing is I will be the one doing the work for him, better than towing him tho

Well If he is just gonna let it die then i suggest he start making calls now as there really isnt alot of stock options , if he "waits" and it goes soon he may lose the season.

Update: been waiting 2.5 months for the parts, local dealer was less than helpful. So I reached out to a few others and apparently there is a global shortage with the repair kit and it could be the fall before I see parts. If your thinking about doing this job hopefully you can put it off for a bit.

On the positive side I have a full tank of gas I paid peanuts for compared todays prices
