Looks like DFO may have listened all the complaints re. the stupid, ineffective proposed closures around Sooke and Port Renfrew - good news!.

Still need to get them to drop using these useless static closures and go with a moving protection bubble like WA state has to better protect SRKW's

Thats a Chinook Mgmt Measure to avoid Fraser 5-2 fish, nothing to do with SRKW....but it still has to transition towards a MSF fishery given the very low encounter rates of these fish in the 123 - 127 fisheries. The biological impact to 5-2 fish given the very low encounters and fact that wild Chinook release would be mandatory under MSF makes a lot of sense in a number of areas.

this is the actual reason we have closures.. political upriver bargaining/pandering. not the minute of % we catch.

Indeed. Conservation and good science based resource management takes a back seat to politics and the ruling party to pander to their voter base. That’s why the public fishery has to get more political or it will perish like it has on the east coast!

First of all I think we all agree the running over whales and chasing them doesn't help them.

Still baffled at this environmental lobby.

Anglers are probably the closest to conservation as most in general public. Many anglers are involved In restoration projects etc.

In a short span of 6 years Misty MacDaffee along with other members on the MCC Caucus have made a mission to go on attack against the sport fishery in all aspects. It actually is starting to feel a tad personal. Ask any of the anglers or people thar attend meetings is in. There is zero compromise.

What a weird thing. You attack the group most entwined in conservation. Technically would have been more than ally.

This whale no go protection isn't based on any science period. They can't even agree on any metric that says it's working or not.

Then to top off there isn't even an agreed target of how many whales were trying too achieve here.

Why is it so hard to just adopt the bubble zone idea. Apply it to all vessels. Save the money and put it towards proper TC enforcement etc.

If environmentalists like Raincoast care about whales then they need start working with the anglers instead of against them.

Right now the strategy isn't working on both sides quite honestly. We are wasting the resources we need from department desperately to work on salmon restoration.

As much as many of you think this is some win there is still one troubling loss. That area at Jordan River as an addition. That is an expansion and is backed up with old data, and no science.

There will be more coming if we don't get rid of all of these. They won't stop until entire coast has an MPA or no go zone around it.

I said when they took Pender Bluffs away it was just the start. The expansion of closed areas will continue to grow. Environmentalists are like fundamental religious sects, faith based not fact based.

Southern Resident Killer Whales are in the southern Gulf Islands! DFO's Whales Tracking Network confirmed their presence on May 6, marking the first confirmed detection of Southern Residents since monitoring in the area began on May 1st. This Southern Resident Killer Whale detection has triggered recreational and commercial salmon fisheries in the area to close. Starting May 8, there is no recreational or commercial salmon fishing in Subarea 18-9 and portions of Subareas 18-2, 18-4 and 18-5 until November 30, 2024. Food, Social and Ceremonial harvest and domestic treaty fishing access is not prohibited. Additional Fishing Measures Fishery closures will be in place for commercial and recreational salmon: - Around Swiftsure Bank (in portions of Subareas 20-1, 21-0, 121-1 and 121-2) from July 15 until October 31, 2024. - In the Strait of Juan de Fuca (in portions of Subareas 20-4 and 20-5) from August 1 until October 31, 2024 - In a portion of the mouth of the Fraser River (in a portion of Subarea 29-3) from August 1 to September 30, 2024. Fishers are encouraged to stop fishing (do not haul gear) within 1,000 metres of killer whales year-round, in all Canadian Pacific waters.

Meanwhile the bc ferries and other large commercial shipping traffic plow through these areas - but not fishing boats running 9.9hp kickers as they disturb the whales - what stupid BS!!

Last Thursday we were waiting on the wind to die off in the gulf. Farting around just at the entrance to active in the Trincomali channel. When 3 whale watch boats showed up just packed with people on-board. There were several very large herring clusters inside and outside of active pass. The very very special little SRKW showed up and just hung out feeding on herring. The whale boats were definetly closer then 400m. We kept our distance and just watch for a while. Watch them feed on 2 year old herring. We watched 6 or 7 ferries go through there without slowing down. The ferries were mainly watching out for the whales watch boats as they were clogging the entrance to active on the inside. Whales didn't seem to care either way. As the tide began to run out from trincomali into active and get sucked in the toilet bowl the herring moved with the tide and the whales followed them.
