The Government of Canada would like to hear your input on listing 6 Pacific salmon designatable units (DUs) as special concern under the Species at Risk Act, and any comments on the benefits and costs this listing would have on you, your industry, your community and/or the ecosystem.

  • Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawtscha): DU 3 (Lower Fraser, Stream, Spring [Birkenhead] population; hereafter Birkenhead Chinook)
  • Chinook salmon: DU 21 (East Coast Vancouver Island, Ocean, Fall population; hereafter DU 21 Chinook)
  • Sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka): DU 196 (Alouette-ES [original] population; hereafter Alouette sockeye)
  • Sockeye salmon: DU 197 (Coquitlam-ES [original] population; hereafter Coquitlam sockeye)
  • Sockeye salmon: DU 13 (Nahatlatch-ES population; hereafter Nahatlatch sockeye)
  • Sockeye salmon: DU 7 (Francois-Fraser-S population; hereafter Francois-Fraser sockeye)

Fall East Coast Cn of Vancouver Island ????

Let me see- Quinsam, Puntledge, Big Qualicum, Little Qualicum , Cowichan plus other smaller systems like the Englishman , Nanaimo. Maybe the people proposing these river should take a look at the ESSR program before doing something stupid like this proposal.

Cowichan had near record returns last year... same as most of the others. Quinsam/Campbell is a bit of an outlier with smaller but still decent return.

what exactly does this mean? if they get labeled as species at risk does that mean no more fishing?

sockeye is what it is, if there is numbers there gonna fish always have always will, regardless of the at risk sockeye stocks mixed in.

Were already restricted over spring and summer run chinook timing.

The ECVI is a weird one, id like to see why they picked it, and what makes if difference from from say WCVI chinook populations.

The ECVI fall one could be a kick to the nuts, it also could be an excuse to cut hatchery production

"DU 21 Chinook were overfished through the 1970s and early 1980s and extensive hatchery programs were initiated to supplement production from naturally spawning adults. However, abundance was also impacted by changes in the marine environment that limited productivity. Marine survival is estimated to have declined by 90% overall from 1973-2010. Currently, the most significant threats to this DU are ecosystem modifications and water management. Total exploitation of Chinook salmon has been reduced substantially since the mid-1970s, but DU 21 Chinook still experience the highest exploitation rates in British Columbia. Recovery continues to be limited by poor marine survival and potential competition and gene flow from hatchery-origin individuals."
